We have no choice but to kick Hungary out of the EU.

[–] Diplomjodler@feddit.de 25 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Can we please get on with that?

[–] letsgo@lemm.ee 10 points 7 months ago (2 children)

And have you thought about what happens the next day? Orban applies to join the Russian Federation. As if Kaliningrad isn't enough of a problem for the EU now we've got a Russian forward base west of Vienna.

We have no choice but to keep Hungary IN the EU. Unless of course they want to leave. It's not like we forced them to join or stay.

What you wrote is so dumb. Why and how would Hungary join Russia? You can't just apply to join another country. And what Hungary stands to win from leaving EU and joining Russia? Hungary is literally surrounded by EU countries or country that want to get into EU. There is no treaty that would allow any Russian forces or literally anything from Russia to get to Hungary, so you can't compare it with Kaliningrad. Hungary has literally nothing to gain from leaving EU, a lot to lose and no way to threaten the EU if it leaves EU. The only "power" Hungary has is voting in ways that create problems for other EU members.

You can’t just apply to join another country.

I'm sure that Orban has no intention of doing so, but sure you can.

[–] MoonJellyfish@lemmy.today 2 points 7 months ago

I meant that you need to take care of a lot of diplomacy related stuff before doing so. Even Kaliningrad has agreements to allow consumer goods to get in from Russia.

[–] realitista@lemm.ee 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

You can't apply, but you can de-facto fall under the control of a foreign force. Look at Belarus for how this would work. Hungary could easily be hosting Russian troops and nukes in the same way.

[–] MoonJellyfish@lemmy.today 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

One big difference, Belarus isn't surrounded almost completely by NATO countries. And Hungary has not any direct border with Russia. To get nukes to Hungary, Russia should go through Ukraine or through NATO territory.

Well that's kind of the whole point of the war in Ukraine. Land bridge to Transnistria. Next step will be a land bridge to Hungary and Slovakia.

Poland would veto any change anyway

[–] crispy_kilt@feddit.de 18 points 7 months ago

Maybe not. The fascists are no longer in power.

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 12 points 7 months ago

It would have when PiS were in power. They’re not, other than the President, and the new centrist government has distanced itself from Orban.

I feel like Hungary wants to be a dictatorship but doesn't want to leave the EU because of the money they receive. And somehow, I don't think they can have it both ways for much longer.

[–] crispy_kilt@feddit.de 25 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

That's not just your feeling, that's exactly it

[–] gregorum@lemm.ee 6 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

Is that just Orbán, or do the Hungarian people feel the same way? Or is it just who’s left in Hungary since so many people have left?

[–] enieffak@feddit.de 7 points 7 months ago (2 children)

The hungarian media is at large similar to the media in east germany in soviet times.

[–] gregorum@lemm.ee 5 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Well, I’m glad I’m old enough to know what that means, lol

Edit: wait, no I’m not! Being my age sucks!

[–] Vivarevo@sopuli.xyz 3 points 7 months ago

Because media was the first thing orban took control of

[–] federalreverse@feddit.de 45 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

What a weird parallel universe the guy appears to be living in. Somehow the EU making requirements for its financial aid is the equivalent of a foreign nation trying to conquer Hungary? All the while, Hungary is free to secede from the EU.

[–] iarigby@lemmy.world 33 points 7 months ago

What a revolting speech. Every time I hear something from the guy it’s more evil than his worst caricature

[–] brainrein@feddit.de 28 points 7 months ago (1 children)

If he is right, then how come his country's population is leaving it in the hundreds of thousands for Western countries to find a job and a life?

[–] ErilElidor@feddit.de 9 points 7 months ago (1 children)

~~Berlin~~ Budapest Wall when?

[–] hydroptic@sopuli.xyz 6 points 7 months ago

I'd settle for an Orbán wall

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe 15 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Everyone should be proud of their home but get fuckin real you clown. Regardless of everything else, Belgium alone is more populous and richer than you.

This is even dumber than when he talked about keeping Hungarian blood pure.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 11 points 7 months ago

That's a pretty elderly-looking crowd listening to him in the photo.

[–] giddy@aussie.zone 5 points 7 months ago

Is this a propaganda journal?

[–] crispy_kilt@feddit.de 5 points 7 months ago

What a joke of a man
