According to the IDF, troops in the raids over past months silently reached around 1,000 Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon, some of them several kilometers from the border fence, including tunnels and bunkers where the terror group had stored weapons. The IDF said the sites were located both inside Lebanese villages and in forested areas.

The raids have been carried out since early in the Israel-Hamas war, after the IDF said it managed to push back Hezbollah’s elite Radwan force from the border area, enabling Israeli commandos to enter Lebanon with almost no detection. There were no direct clashes with Hezbollah operatives amid any of the raids.

I'm guessing that to be able to identify all these caches while Hezbollah was away and go destroy them, Israel had probably pretty deeply compromised Hezbollah, had to have known in advance where all their supplies were placed.

Hagari added that the Israeli military is “fully prepared to defend and retaliate” to the Iranian attack, stressing that it would be in a “timely manner.”

Plus, the US was talking about a response to any direct Iranian attack on Israel.

The IRGC also warned Israel that any response to the attack regime would be met by more severe Iranian retaliation.

Sounds like we're liable to have a busy time as posting activity goes on worldnews.

The US has satellites that can count the hairs on someone's head

Naw, there are physical limits significantly above that. US reconaissance satellites do get pretty close to the theoretical limits, though.

It came up back when Trump was in office and tweeted some satellite picture from one of his briefings at full resolution, was in the news for a bit in that he'd inadvertently exposed satellite capabilities.

Based on the resolution of the photo Trump tweeted, though, it appears USA 224 has a resolution of at least 10 centimeters, if not better as Trump appears to have taken an image of a printout.

That being said, no disagreement on the broader point, that the US probably has a pretty good idea of what Iran is doing with its ballistic missiles.

"In any event, the impact on oil prices will remain the key channel of transmission to the global economy," Reilly added, noting Iran accounts for about 4% of global oil output. "An important consideration will be whether Saudi Arabia increases production if Iranian supplies were disrupted."

I was just commenting on an article here the other day about how Saudi Arabia had just increased their production.

Saudi Arabia to drop $100 crude target to win back market share, FT reports

Oil prices spiked on Tuesday after Iran fired a series of ballistic missiles at Israel, pushing prices to the highest level in nearly one year.

West Texas Intermediate (CL=F) rose more than 5% to trade just below $72 per barrel. Brent (BZ=F), the international benchmark price, also climbed roughly 5% to hover firmly above $75 per barrel.

The head of an Iranian secret service unit set up to target Mossad agents working in the Islamic Republic turned out to be an Israeli agent himself, according to former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Speaking to CNN Turk, Ahmadinejad claimed Monday that a further 20 agents in the Iranian intelligence team tasked with monitoring Israeli spying activities also turned against Tehran.

Now, now. It looks like the ramp is coming off the flight deck. Maybe it's for boarding actions.

The official warned that any direct attack on Israel by Iran “will carry severe consequences for Iran.”

Iran readying 'imminent' ballistic missile attack against Israel, U.S. official tells NBC News

Well, I was guessing from the statements Iran made that they weren't going to engage Israel directly, and I'd read several analyses saying Iran had stated that they weren't looking for a broader conflict, but maybe it's going to happen after all.

not only is this the first carrier with a deck mounted 16" turret

The HMS Furious in 1917 had both a rear 18" turret and a flight deck at the same time, though it might be questionable as to whether-or-not it'd qualify as an aircraft carrier (though the concept of an "aircraft carrier" was pretty embryonic in 1917, so some allowance probably has to be made). And while the turret was on a deck, it wasn't on the flight deck.

The Brits awarded Gradwell the DSC for putting tanks on his decks.

There's been recent doctrinal hotness with the Marines working on the concept of sticking a HIMARS unit on the flight decks of their amphibious assault ships.

https://taskandpurpose.com/news/himars-marine-corps-ship-deck/

...chaining the vehicle-mounted system to the vessel’s flight deck before firing off a 227mm GPS-guided M31 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GLMRS) rocket at a mock target floating in the waters near a Pacific island some 70 kilometers away.

The results were, well, explosive:

Sure, parking a rocket truck on the flight deck of a vessel on the open ocean seems simple enough, but Marine officials are overjoyed with the success of the Oct. 22 exercise. “The ability to project power from and at sea is critical,” 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade ops officer Lt. Col. Tom Savage told the U.S. Naval Institute from aboard the Dawn Blitz flagship USS Essex. “It’s a significant capability.”

The test has been in the works since at least September, when Marine Commandant Gen. Neller dropped a public hint. “We know we can shoot HIMARS [High Mobility Artillery Rocket System] off the flight deck of a ship,” Neller said during remarks at the at the Marine Corps League’s annual Modern Day Marine expo in Quantico, Virginia, on Sept. 21, according to Defense News. “You’re going to see precision fire delivered off amphib ships, whether it comes out of tube guns or rockets or delivered from unmanned systems.”

I think that the real question here isn't "should we be court-martialing the captain", but "what award should the captain receive for use of innovative tactics?"

I can't get a bunch of 'em, wish that there was spoiler text with context, especially on current events, where often the first I see of the event is the NCD reference.

Yeah, same. If I were going to get a handheld console, it's pretty much exactly what I'd want, but...I really don't need another portable computing device.

An unspecified number of troops in the US have been put on prepare to deploy orders, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said on Monday.

“Secretary Austin increased the readiness of additional US forces to deploy, elevating our preparedness to respond to various contingencies,” she said. “I’m just not going to get into specifics for [operational security] reasons, but these forces cover a wide range of capabilities and missions.”

Singh also said that additional air defense support going to the region, announced by the Pentagon on Sunday, are units previously scheduled to deploy that will now be joining units already there instead of replacing them.

The reinforcement of air support capabilities, she said, includes “a certain number of units already deployed to the Middle East region that will be extended, and the forces due to rotate into theater to replace them will now instead augment the in-place forces already in the region.” It will include “an additional few thousand” service members in the region, she said.

“I can tell you these augmented forces include F-16, F-15E, A-10, F-22 fighter aircraft and associated personnel,” Singh said.

The reports come amid growing indications of an imminent Israeli ground incursion into southern Lebanon.
