Here's everything we know about it so far:

  • It will use ActivityPub.
  • It will be a side app of Instagram.
  • It will most likely be called Threads.
  • Your Instagram verification status will transfer over.
  • There will be easy discovery tools in place: Your Instagram followers will be able to follow you on Threads as well (they won't transfer over automatically).

What do you think?

Actually, maybe! If it really is ActivityPub compliant.

No thanks, I’ll stick with mastodon. But if Meta’s version is enabled on the fediverse then I welcome it

I say it’s cool to see a big company like Meta dipping it’s toes into ActivityPub and possibly cross-platform compatibility. I think that has the chance to expose more people to to the paradigm, and I really do think that more people should consider it. I’m wary about how Meta may approach it and what Meta may choose to do with it in time, but in sum, I’m in favor of it.

That sure doesn’t mean that I will be on Meta’s platform though 🙈.

I think it’ll be good for wider exposure, but I am wary of Meta’s history. Mastodon looks like it’ll scratch the Twitter itch in me plenty fine, and I’m of the understanding that Mastodon’s larger instances are pretty respectable in how they operate. Once I get my domain set up so I can don some self-hosted handles, I’ll be going with Mastodon’s services over Meta’s.

The main thing I dislike is that it will use the name Threads. Finding info on Thread, the network protocol for home automation devices, will be much harder. Might be niche, but annoying.

Nah, I’m happy with the apub apps I’m already using.

Big tech can’t always do things better. I’ve had access to BlueSky for a couple weeks now and IMO, it sucks.

I’d rather stick with Masto and Lemmy.

Join anything from Meta? Hell naw!

Plus, it will be integrated with Instagram? Even further hell naw!

[–] squaresinger@feddit.de 7 points 1 year ago

Nope. Musk is an evil moron, but Meta isn't better.

That said, I never used Twitter either.

insert that clip of Michael Scott from the Office shouting various varieties of "No!" here

[–] breadsmasher@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

No way I’m touching anything facebook owns

No. What's the Web 2.0 version of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. Because that. Oh, and because that company is toxic waste. No, worse that that. At least toxic waste comes with the promise that enough work would leave it inert.

[–] worfamerryman@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago (8 children)

Why? We already have mastodon.

Wouldn't even consider it for a second, fuck the Zuck!

[–] princessofcute@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No interest whatsoever. I don't like Facebook (I refuse to call them meta) or any of it's subsidiaries. Mastodon works great for my Twitter like needs.

I do hope that most instances block them though, for obvious privacy reasons but also because it would be hilarious as it would basically invalidate one of the major selling points of the ActivityPub protocol for them.

Not in the least. I have Mastodon for short form brain farts, Cohost for essays (though it seems to be more of a Tumblr replacement these days), and Beehaw/Lemmy for feeding my unending thirst for random tidbits of knowledge. Corporate social media can go pound sand.

[–] emma@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago

Absolutely no way. I want as many firewalls as possible between me and the crap they pull so I'll move instances if any I'm on federate with a Meta platform.

[–] iamstevenrivers@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago

Yuk. No thanks.

[–] Djokkum@rammy.site 6 points 1 year ago

Why would I? Lemmy is honestly a breath of fresh air, and if anything I feel like I should move away from social media hosted by big tech companies.

[–] nogooduser@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I don’t really get Twitter so I won’t but even if I did I would choose a Mastadon instance over a Meta product.

[–] Silviecat44@vlemmy.net 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I will stick with Mastodon

Will you join?

If it's ActivityPub and federated, surely I won't have to?

[–] spdrmx@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago

Good thing about it is that since it will use ActivityPub, all fediverse instances can restrict it and they'll lose a big chunk of possible content.

[–] 0xtero@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

Short answer: No.
Long answer: Nooooooooooooooo.

[–] Steeve@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Unpopular opinion: yeah, probably. Facebook and Instagram have come a long way in tackling misinformation and hate speech since 2016. Obviously they aren't perfect, but now that Twitter is pushing that shit into my recommendations I want updates from my feed without having to support Twitter.

That being said I've never interacted with Twitter much, only used it for updates, so it's not like Meta will get anything from my limited personal data.

[–] minimar@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I never thought I'd hear the sentence "Facebook is better at policing hate speech than Twitter"

A snowball has a better chance of surviving in hell than me joining anything Meta.

[–] thefingolfin@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago

Seems very unlikely for me. I have been actively avoiding anything Meta

[–] ArtemZ@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Hahaha. No.

No matter what Meta will be releasing I'm not touching it with a long pole.

[–] HorseFD@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I'll stick with Mastodon. Is it a slight improvement over Musk, though? I guess.

[–] TheSwede@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago

Not a chance, I use Facebook only for groups (have rats so in a few niche groups), and the Meta quest headset since it was what I could afford for VR and it's standalone (shame it's not owned by oculus anymore). Other than that I refuse to use metas products and have never felt the need for twitter.

[–] GreyCat134@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

No, but it will be funny to watch Elon’s reaction when it launches.

[–] Poot@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago

The idea of getting involved with any kind of corporate media at this point turn to my stomach, especially after all this happened in the last couple years.

Why in God's name would anybody invest any time and energy into yet another corporate platform that will just be yanked, or turned into a nightmare when some corporate man baby decides he hasn't had enough profits to keep himself in new yachts.

I'm sick of it, have absolutely no intention whatsoever of participating in that crap anymore.

[–] m105@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 year ago

No, thank you!

[–] Dlb@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago
[–] ezri@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

Absolutely not. Have you forgotten the disaster that Facebook is?

[–] Speex@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

Not a chance in this world I’ll join without them paying me money to do it.
