Since the last major lemmy update there is a federation issue that could be the reason for your problems. Some servers/instances have fixed that problem, some still run on the version that has problems.

It's been that way for me ever since I came on Lemmy. I figured bugs or something so I have waited for months but just thought I'd ask.
If it's since then you might be affected by something else, too. But there definitely is the federation bug since version 0.19.0 (early December). So no matter what you do, until the developers fix this, you currently won't be able to see all the posts/comments.
Wasn't it fixed in 0.19.1?
No. 0.19.1 was supposed to fix it, but it didn't. And people said it syncs at least every 24h hours, but that also wasn't the case.
The bugreport got re-opened, and I already saw some workarounds and tags for another upcoming bugfix release.
Do you have the setting to hide bot accounts turned on? When I had that on I noticed a lot of missing comments.
I'll check.
Go to your settings and make sure your language preferences include "undetermined" as well as your preferred languages. Lemmy only shows comments that match your preferences.
yes that's always been my preferred languages
You can Ctrl+select multiple languages. Do you also have Undetermined+English+whatever else is relevant set?
In my experience the federation issues others are referring to don't report missing comments because they aren't technically there on anything but the home instance so I'm inclined to believe it's something different.
Can you share examples?
It's much easier to pinpoint when you can see it for yourself, and look for patterns like is it missing a particular instance's comments, or is it all from instances running a newer/older version of Lemmy.
So I don't seem to have any issues with posts made on lemmy.ca, my local instance. It's elsewhere, like Lemmy.world where I can't see majority of comments. For instance, this post has 40 comments but I only see 5.
That's interesting given the community is hosted on lemmy.world, it should be the one with the authoritative view. And I see plenty of lemmy.world comments on lemmy.ca on that post.
It... Seems fine to me so that might be a user setting. Do you see the same problem when logged out?
Since both sites have the same comment count, I'm fairly sure it's either a language setting (not having undetermined selected), or due to user blocks.
I don't see any problems when logged out. In fact I can now see many more posts on lemmy world site.
What app/website are you using?
What you can also try is making accounts on those instances to see what is being filtered. You might notice a pattern hopefully.
Even accessing the community directly on the instance might work

No way really? That's weird! I can't see 90% of the comments on almost any other instances, like .world and .ml.
SOLVED: My language selection was on "undetermined". This excluded all the posts and users who had selected "english". I was playing around with the settings and DELETED ALL language preferences. That allowed all the posts and comments to appear again.
If you've ever blocked anyone, that causes their content to be invisible to the blocker (though not the other way around it seems).
I have an account on Lemme.world and another on Lemm.ee and my Lemm.ee. My posts from Lemm.ee are not showing up within my Lemme.world community. So Iβve given up at this point until things get resolved
Well youβre in luck because the lemm.ee admin just upgraded their infrastructure today, along with fixing the federation issues from the 0.19 upgrade last month . Lemm.ee is now stable and noticeably faster.

as far as I know yes
I logged out and went to Lemmy.world world news. I can now see that MOST of the POSTS on Lemmy.world are HIDDEN when I visit it logged in. So it's not just the comments but posts as well!
