Add Youtube to the list...

[–] casmael@startrek.website 30 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah YouTube is one of the more annoying ones imo

[–] refurbishedrefurbisher@lemmy.sdf.org 23 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah. Lack of any viable alternatives really sucks with YouTube in particular. Hosting video is too damn expensive.

Add most of the commercial internet to the list

[–] jivandabeast@lemmy.browntown.dev 1 points 11 months ago (3 children)

What's happened to YouTube? It's been more or less the same experience for me.

Unless this is about ads? But tbh i don't even consider that to be remotely on the same scale as the issues with Reddit and Twitter

[–] Meowoem@sh.itjust.works 10 points 11 months ago

They have a few problems like demoneytising for arbitrary reasons, over zealous moderation on some topics and almost zero on others - I think things are starting to relax a bit but there was a time where history channels would avoid saying the word Hitler or Nazi in their documentary about ww2. Likewise if a film or news story has someone 'commit the unthinkable' and 'unalive themselves' it can make hard topics much more difficult.

There's a lot of engagement spam too, so many channels doing fake restorations, fake pool building, fake animal rescues... Then the ones which just have an ai voice reading fake stories from Reddit, chat gpt gibberish, or awful old jokes copy pasted from old books.

There is amazing content too though of course and I think it's by far the best place to get entertainment and education resources

At least they've had (bad) attempts at blocking adblockers recently. Search function has became almost unusable etc.

[–] pastbynow@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

There are multiple workarounds for YouTube ads like Revanced on Android for example. On Computer I didn't encounter any issues for using the uBlock Origin extension.

[–] KpntAutismus@lemmy.world 56 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (5 children)

we have alternatives to both. people just need to switch.

but youtube is really hard to replace.

[–] 768@sh.itjust.works 12 points 11 months ago

Don't worry, there's TikTok. /s

SEO might actually enshittificate YT or make it dependant on AI. Both are hard to deal with from a privacy or open source POV.

[–] KISSmyOS@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

My alternative to youtube is reading books from the local library and playing the guitar.
The decline of reddit and youtube especially has done wonders to my quality of life.

[–] Cowbee@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago

Newpipe is great, for me. I don't have a steady stream of recommendations or shorts, just content I actually subscribe to and whatever is trending if I go there, or manually search for.

The infection of ads into every corner of Social media legitimately was making me a worse person, with a shorter attention span and no mental clarity.

[–] Opafi@feddit.de 5 points 11 months ago (2 children)

What about Peertube as an alternative?

Like, I use neither. Just curious.

[–] covert_czar@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 11 months ago

Perfect from the user side but not that great for content creators and server owners

[–] covert_czar@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 11 months ago

Hard to monetize + server costs

[–] kylian0087@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Your best bed with youtube is odysee. It is not perfect but much better then youtube.

[–] Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Nebula.tv has some promise. It's not free but it's very cheap and creator-owned. Plus there's no ads. But it can never be a true replacement for Youtube because it doesn't allow just anyone to upload there.

[–] jtk@lemmy.sdf.org 31 points 11 months ago (1 children)

A direct, very intentional, assault on major social media by fascists.

[–] creditCrazy@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Wouldn't exactly say fashisim is to blame but rather simply corpos want maximize profit on a hinherently unprofitable business models. Like I'm personally not seeing much ideology getting pushed anywhere. Granted I hardly spend time on Twitter but all I've been seein on x is furry tits and on the other platforms just ads getting pushed. From what I can tell you can say what ever and no one will hear you over the ads.

[–] jtk@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I have Twitter completely blocked, just from the news alone it's clear Elon is pushing a political agenda at the expense of the business, which means it's the intended point, because he's not dumb. It doesn't matter what you specifically would see in your timeline these days, assuming you would follow better-than-garbage people. The platform is directly being advertised to the world as a place for fascist ideology to go unchecked. The people that know that, and stay on the platform specifically for that reason, are following a very different set of accounts and they're getting a huge, daily dose of empowerment as Elon lets it flow freely, even engages in it regularly. Again, intentionally.

[–] aniki@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Twitter, instagram, facebook, reddit -- DNS blocked on my network. The addition of that simple friction to viewing those sites has completely broken me of the crutch. [Plus the Murdock-block plugin and I'm in a great place.]

[–] jtk@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

I went an extra step and made myself a Firefox add-on a few years ago. It takes a regular expression, scans all element attributes for values matching the expression, and applies a given CSS style to those elements. Given a pattern like... (Holy hell, you can't really post a regular expression on lemmy, it's trying to do some markdown stuff to it, but it involves the domains of all the sites I hate like twitter.com, x.com, facebook.com, etc...), and the style visibility: hidden, all links to those sites, no matter what page I'm on, are completely removed from my internet experience. I never see them.

Edit: Oh the regex issue was actually because my add-on was filtering the elements with twitter.com, x.com, etc. as it's supposed to :) I can't even see my own comment unless I turn it off.

[–] aniki@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

That's amazing! Do you have the source anywhere? I've always wanted to dabble in simple Firefox plugins

[–] jtk@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ssure/

Source: https://github.com/7w0/ssure

Be warned, the UI is just a textarea that takes JSON and involves escaping characters for both JS strings and regular expressions in the same string. regex requires backslashes to escape things like '.' and JS requires backslashes to be doubled to output a single backslash 😬 The example escaped JSON at the bottom of the options screen should be enough to figure out how to add your own domains to the list. The only reason it's a public plugin is because it's literally impossible to just run a plugin from a local source without having to do a ton of extra steps every time you start the browser. Also, you'll occasionally get confused why things don't seem right on the internet, like when I tried to talk about this plugin and mentioned twitter.com, causing my own comment to look messed up after I posted it, because the plugin was doing exactly what I told it to do :)

Am I the only one who is frustrated about the text placement over the colors?

[–] Fridgeratr@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I think they wanted to avoid "Reddit Twitter becoming becoming worse worse"

[–] laughingsquirrel@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 11 months ago

For me, it's not the text placement itself but the mapping of color and text. Reddit should be red, Twitter should be blue 🧐

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 4 points 11 months ago
[–] Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg 15 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I'm colorblind so I could be way off... But it looks like the red one is Twitter and the blue one is Reddit which just seems ironic lol

[–] MaxVoltage@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

i will pray for your sensor array comrade

[–] Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg 2 points 11 months ago

Easily top 10 replies to "I'm colorblind so I could be way off" 😂

[–] fiat_lux@kbin.social 7 points 11 months ago

You're 100% correct

[–] fne8w2ah@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

Fuck spez and elmo.

[–] Meowoem@sh.itjust.works 7 points 11 months ago

I think rich people are working really hard to try and get the republicans in power next election, that should probably tell you all you need to know about how to vote

[–] jvrava9@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 11 months ago

The enshitification continues

[–] greenhorn@lemm.ee 5 points 11 months ago

I more likes on my tweets than ever since Elon took over! ...And the increase is all bots.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

And here comes Discord with steel chair!

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 4 points 11 months ago (2 children)

In 2023... Why would you use either?

[–] sbv@sh.itjust.works 19 points 11 months ago (4 children)

to be where the people are?

I love the idea of our little corner of the Internet, but it doesn't have the content or the users of the incumbents.

[–] caveman8000@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] JoumanaKayrouz@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago (1 children)

As a people myself, I find your comment wildly insensitive.

[–] schmidtster@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

But also incredibly accurate.

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Conceptually I get what you're saying, but I've never used Twitter and I dropped Reddit in July cold turkey.

I have had no issues being where the people are just sticking to the Fediverse.

I don't feel like I've missed anything. I did pick up Mastodon, but that's just lurking. I picked up a few news apps to fill in a blank or two, but those usually end up on Lemmy anyway.

[–] JoumanaKayrouz@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago (3 children)

I gotta drop Reddit. News is all about Trump and everything else is either petty or misinformation.

[–] Bonehead@kbin.social 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Welcome to the consequences of driving away competent moderation...

[–] Buelldozer@lemmy.today 4 points 11 months ago

Trump and more generally Conservative bashing has been blaring out of Reddit at top volume since the 2016 elections and every election cycle they find new ways to make it even louder and more obnoxious. This year's moderator exodus really had nothing to do with it. Yes Trump and many Conservatives should be beamed directly to a secret underground moon base and held incommunicado until their natural deaths but the fact that the conversation can't ever be shifted to anything else is so tiring.
