Yeah no shit. They aren’t acting on it yet because they’ve got other targets first but atheists are on the list of enemies

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 20 points 9 months ago (3 children)

My daughter is a queer atheist Jew. I'm only slightly less fucked than her by being heterosexual. I'm worried about her with the 'queer' part first, both of us with the 'Jew' part second and both of us plus my wife for the 'atheist' part with the third.

There are so many reasons theocrats want my family dead and they make no secret of it.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Damn yeah, that’s a lot. I worry a lot about by queer atheist Jewish friends (and the queer religious Jewish friends too, it’s not like the christofascists will ally with folks just because they attend synagogue regularly).

The thing is I don’t think they’re going to try to round up the atheists, just make public displays of atheism illegal and target a few big name ones. But they’ll harp on atheism.

I see it already in some of the weirdest ways. I’ve had Christians try to act like we’re some buddy buddy group of religious people (I’m pagan) as opposed to the atheists and Satanists. Atheists and Satanists have never persecuted my religion outside of soviet state mandated atheism, and Russia didn’t bother stopping persecuting the pagans when they went christian so I think that’s more on Russia than atheism. Atheists generally want a government where your religion is your problem and you don’t get to force it on people or hurt people with it. That’s exactly what I want. And I know that the fact that I don’t believe in their god will eventually cause problems

Yup. Atheist Jew here too, from a family of atheist Jews, from an extended family of holocaust survivors. The world feels quite hostile towards nearly everything about me. It’s long past time for everyone to stand up, speak out, and vote. Silence can be actively destructive. Those of us who have been through this before unfortunately have a responsibility to denounce hatred wherever and whenever we see it. We’re almost at the point of no return.

People say this every time a study comes out and says stuff like “Republicans are more likely to read fewer news sources than Democrats”. It’s part of a problem with popular science that laying groundwork like this turns into political volleyball. The reality is that if there isn’t enough data on something incredibly obvious, it makes it really easy to study and is necessary for other studies to take place or to give context info for a study. Doing political studies must get exhausting quick.

Yes, everything does.

[–] minnieo@kbin.social 20 points 9 months ago

and in other news, the sky is blue

Shocking new discovery, water is wet /s

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

it was even more shocking when they found a way to make water MORE wet.

it's funny, maybe soap works on religion, too, since, you know, a lot of them avoid soap like the plague.

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 18 points 9 months ago (1 children)

They don't even avoid the plague.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Good point. I need a new analogy.

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

Avoid it like a white Christian nationalist avoids vaccines.

Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

[–] naura@kbin.social 13 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I suppose easier to hate an atheist than that creepy pedo uncle

[–] Binthinkin@kbin.social 12 points 9 months ago

Ask any Republikid who grew up in a Christian household. It’s been that way since the 80’s.

[–] agent_flounder@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago

Yeah I know, they're coming for us. Not awesome.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

Yes, as the hate movement gets more empowered, they'll attack other marginalized demographics.

Curiously, a lot of the public dislike or distrust atheists, but not very much. They don't want atheist elected officials and will dis us on surveys but they will still invite us to the community barbecue and eat our pork ribs. (contrast treatment of gays and nonwhites in a red state)

Once the facists control the government, they'll go after Christians who are the wrong denomination and patriots who aren't snappy enough with their salute.

Surprising nobody.

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 4 points 9 months ago

And vice versa. I know this example is more blatant in some individuals but it's a thing that happens for everyone for all sorts of labels. It's just an unfortunate part of human nature

[–] carnimoss@lemmings.world 2 points 9 months ago

I just wish places away from them and the like weren't so expensive

[–] badbytes@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

Yeah, but Christians are loved by all.
