Given the way people talk about it I did expect a much higher number.
tbh it's a WAY smaller percentage than I expected, and it's good, considering it's the "flagship" homeserver

if you were wondering about the resource usage. It's fairly high I think, especially the HDD space. Also it seems to keep all old messages forever??
Those resources are fairly old/outdated. Not only is Synapse better now, but also Dendrite and Conduit are much more viable, and much less resource hungry too.
Nah I got plenty of compute to spare I've just been busy with other internal services lately.
As always, I think bland statistics need to be treated with a good deal of caution: For example, I have two Matrix accounts on different servers (one is Matrix.org). I do this, because sometimes a Matrix server goes down for whatever reason, and I want to ensure that I can still contact the people I need to.
I hope Matrix continues to do well - especially in the light of Signal going partially proprietary.
Doesn't hosting a server yourself take a ton of resources?
It depends on how active your homeserver's rooms are, how many federated rooms you have (and their activity levels), and how many images, videos, and files are being uploaded to your server. I would imagine that having a lot of bridges to other services would also increase the resources used.
I've looked up whether or not a Raspberry Pi could run a Matrix server, and from what I remember it seems like storage space would be the biggest issue if you have active federated rooms, or rooms with a lot of image/video posts.

that is an article from early 2020 so I would expect it to have changed a fair bit, probably quite abit more then that thanks to facebook going down
we really need to get new people to USE AN ALTERNATIVE HOMESERVER/NODE and runs their own identity servers... this is the only flaw matrix has everyone joining the same homeserver putting all the eggs in one basket
