More serious politics should go in !uk_politics@feddit.uk.

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

To be fair, at least he asked experts when he wasn't sure. It could be worse.

[–] BolexForSoup@kbin.social 12 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

IIRC after he got Covid and had a pretty terrible bout with it he actually changed his tune and did something about it. Trump was getting experimental treatments and could barely stand/breathe (remember that ridiculous "show of strength" he did from a balcony?), refused to correct course.

[–] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

You mean just riffing your dumb ideas live during a press conference?

[–] kaitco@lemmy.world 14 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Wow. He really is the British Trump, isn’t he?

[–] StoneyDcrew@lemmy.world 39 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Trump is an idiot. Boris plays the fool.

I suspect this came about because he is trying to distract from a scandal in a Google search. Like when he said he likes to build model buses to distract from the scandal where he advertised lies about brexit on buses. Or when he said he doesn't like working from home because it "makes him think of cheese" to distract from his illegal wine and cheese party during the covid19 lock down.

The guy is pure irredeemable scum.

[–] Spendrill@lemm.ee 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Let's not forget the time he hid in a fridge.

[–] variants@possumpat.io 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

did he survive a nuclear detonation?

[–] Spendrill@lemm.ee 1 points 10 months ago

Have to wait for his autobiography for that.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 5 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

This is a tactic called memory holing.

Basically you make something impossible to search for by doing something involving those same terms.

Many people accused Kevin Spacey of doing this when he took a movie role about a guy who was falsely accused of exploiting minors. But that was just a coincidence, however what Boris was doing was the real deal.

You looked up Boris and cheese and you get this weird cheese quote instead of anything relating to his illegal party.

lies about brexit on buses

Or ordering a quite impractical routemaster replacement that was more for decoration than for transport (the company who built it couldn't sell any and went bankrupt)

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 14 points 10 months ago (1 children)

2016 was the year that America and Britain we're in a contest to see which country was dumber, at the time it was believed that America would win, Britain seemed like they were ahead, but America had a trump card.

Fuck TERF Island

[–] Chariotwheel@kbin.social 3 points 10 months ago (2 children)

I give the point to America, because they have at least managed to vote out their idiot. Something Britain still needs to do.

[–] interolivary@beehaw.org 2 points 10 months ago

I'd withhold judgement before we see whether they vote their idiot back in next year, and there's a scarily high probability of that happening.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Yeah, but the idea of the Donald Trump actually won the 2020 election will forever be a conspiracy theory believed by idiots. Even though it's the weakest one considering Chump is one of the most unpopular incucumbents in US History

[–] moog@lemm.ee 11 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Between him and trump we have, drink bleach, lightbulb in asshole, hair dryer up nose. What will they think of next

[–] snacks@feddit.uk 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)
[–] interolivary@beehaw.org 4 points 10 months ago

No no, that's ketamine, you're thinking of the horse dewormer ivermectin.

And yes yes I know it's used for humans as well, but the reich-wingers were getting it from veterinary suppliers since you can't get the human version without a prescription. The idiots didn't come to think that the dose used for horses is much bigger than what's used for humans so they took ridiculously high doses, shat out their gut lining and thought that was a sign it was helping.

[–] JohnSmith@feddit.uk 1 points 10 months ago

I think the t-rump bleach method is far more effective. The virus will die…

Mr Cummings gave more details on his claim that Mr Johnson had to be stopped from going to see Queen Elizabeth II in person on March 18 - five days before the first lockdown was announced. He said No10 officials were prepared to prevent him getting into his car. “He rejected our advice,” Mr Cummings wrote. “I was desperate and said something like, ‘If you’ve got Covid and you kill the Queen you’re finished’. [No10 adviser] Cleo [Watson] said she would not let him get in the car. He agreed not to go.”

Pathologically selfish people struggle with the whole concept of taking care of others, and should not be running countries.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.ml 10 points 10 months ago

He did realize that Trump's dumb-ass suggestions weren't something to aspire to. Right? I guess not.

[–] shiveyarbles@beehaw.org 9 points 10 months ago (2 children)

He's not stupid, he's well educated. He's just a colossal asshole.

[–] Treczoks@kbin.social 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

He may be "well educated" in some definition of that term, but obviously not in any reality-relevant topic.

[–] Chariotwheel@kbin.social 2 points 10 months ago

Yeah, people think "smart" is a point on a linear scale from "stupid" to "educated". In Germany we say "Fachidioten" ("subject idiots") for people that are well versed in a subject, but idiots otherwise. You can study something, even be good in that and still talk bullshit. Heck, you might spout bullshit despite good education in the topic. Knowingly and unknowingly.

[–] No_Eponym@lemmy.ca 2 points 10 months ago

That's how I read this too, esp in the context of his disparaging comments about post-covid-condition. This is the same kind of minimising, reduce-the-issue-to-the-rediculous comment as when your aunt looks at you condicendingly and says "I mean, have you tried cutting out avacado toast darling? Maybe that would help you get a house."

[–] Swarfega@lemm.ee 6 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

While I know the internet loves to shit on Boris I will say that this is mirror.co.uk, which is a pretty lousy newspaper, so can hardly be trusted.

[–] tenebrisnox@feddit.uk 4 points 10 months ago

“The Riddle of Genius.” Ho ho ho.

[–] MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

You brits really have to choose the smelliest assholes, I mean you could have put a moldy piece of cheese in most places of power and it would do better. Or at least it would be less smug

[–] snacks@feddit.uk 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

by smugness I take it you come from a place where they dont also elect complete roadkill? I hope youre not american. Canadian perhaps

[–] MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Lol no Serbian. We voted for a shit smear with poisonous mold growing on top. But we don't have the class thing so our smear lacks gravitas

[–] anothermember@beehaw.org 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

What makes you think we have class?

reminds me of one of my favourite quotes:

The Wolf: Just because you are a character doesn't mean that you have character

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 3 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Just get the fucking shot you nimrod.

And get a new barber while you're at it.

[–] Tatters@feddit.uk 10 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Johnson has been vaccinated against COVID several times, and it was on the news at the time. He is publicly pro-vaccine.

The hairdryer thing was probably before vaccines were available, although this article does not make that clear.

[–] leaskovski@kbin.social 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Let's get passed the stupidness of the whole things and look at the concept itself. What is the science here? Blasting heat at a location where COVID bacteria might be lingering?

[–] cucumber_sandwich@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I guess, but it's not a virus, not bacteria.

[–] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

I guess, but it's not a virus, not bacteria.

Then what do you think it is?

[–] Bipta@kbin.social 1 points 10 months ago

That's actually not the worst idea in the world. Certainly not the best. I'd like to see it studied.
