General community for news/discussion in the UK.

Less serious posts should go in !casualuk@feddit.uk or !andfinally@feddit.uk
More serious politics should go in !uk_politics@feddit.uk.

Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

First they came for Israel but I did nothing because I am not Israeli.

Then they came for Doncaster but I did nothing because they’re welcome to it, quite frankly.

Up there with one of the worst "articles" I've ever read

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 13 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Realistically that's on her.

A woman panicked her village near Doncaster was under attack when she spotted a number of paragliders flying over her home

The mirror needs to hire writers who will have at least a board line understanding of the English language. The hell is going on with that sentence, it's crap.

The article's author wrote "A woman worried her village near Doncaster was under attack when she spotted a number of paragliders flying over her home and thought they were from Hamas".

Then the editor took a quick glance at it between 2 lines of coke, erased "worried", wrote "panicked" with a red sharpie and told the author to make sure next time the headline POPS.

It's all written by AI, some algorithm said that was what headlines look like

[–] tal@lemmy.today 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (4 children)

She wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter : “Whoever thought it was funny to parasail over the village, it was in extremely poor taste. Take your twisted hatred somewhere else. There was two parachutes with engines like Hamas used at that festival, gave me a fright. Thought it was some kind of scare tactic or protest.”

The headline doesn't actually describe the article text. She did not say that she thought it was Hamas. She thought that it was some kind of protest. Which may be wrong too, but is not the same thing as believing Hamas is attacking.

It's still really fucking stupid. That lady needs to go live in a cave and never interact with or have to see people again.

[–] Lifebandit666@feddit.uk 8 points 1 year ago

She probably doesn't exist, it was all made up by The Mirror to get a good click baity headline. If she does exist, she shouldn't exist in the news because she's dumb as fuck, but that's the state of the media nowadays.

I think paragliders might possibly predate all the current political ongoings

[–] scrchngwsl@feddit.uk 7 points 1 year ago

Frankly that's even more insane.

[–] kaitco@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Hey man! Facts don’t sell! They don’t move content and they don’t generate clicks.

You and your accuracy are out of place!

Haha, what? The state of British media. Are people believing they're a threat to us?

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think only this one woman did. She should probably get seen by someone in a nice calming white coat.

[–] Lifebandit666@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago

I'm questioning if the social media post actually happened. Smells like bullshit

[–] Lifebandit666@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago

Honestly the only real threat to us is another loan wolf terrorist or a cell operating in this country that takes the plight of Palestine as their hill to die on so to speak.

But I agree with you, it is a clickbait headline designed to stoke either fear or astonishment at the stupidity of others, when it's really just a rehashed abridged story of the ongoing Middle East crisis.

I read an article last week about how a council was getting more calls from people scared of bedbugs from Paris. Same idea, just get eyes on the page for adverts.

Alternative title: Doncaster woman's stupidity is perfect rage-bait for our website.

Fuck that awful rag of a paper.

[–] brewery@feddit.uk 4 points 1 year ago

This made me laugh so hard! Thank you to everyone who contributed to this nonsense article

This intelligence is what lost Britain its empire.
