I don't like tiktok because of the bite-sized content. It fucks with my attention span. I am already super dependent on highly dopaminergic activities and substances, i don't need to fuck my dopaminergic system further into the ground. Currently i'm too bored to fall asleep. That's how bad it is. Tiktok would only make it worse

TikTok's algorithm gives different people wildly different results. I watch and like about 80% videos of animals and 20% absurd comedy sketches, and that's what TikTok continues to recommend to me. If you're watching and engaging with stupid liberal bullshit, it's probably going to show you more of that.

I've been shown what should have been pleasant or even comrade-adjacent things on TikTok before by well-meaning friends and loved ones, butt the delivery style is aggressively obnoxious. Even the videos I should have liked and agreed with felt like being visually slapped over and over again while snippets of no-context music were blasted in my ear for seconds at a time (even music I already liked would be punishingly jarring if I were to chop it up into seconds-long clips) before suddenly stopping again. Repeating that over and over again would be distressing for me if it were forcibly continued.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that gets really sick of the music without context. People play short snippets of songs in their video not because they know the song. It’s so annoying to hear a part of a Shiloh Dynasty, ICP, or Marty Robbins sing and know the poster probably hasn’t even heard the whole song let alone heard the context behind it. It also leads to songs getting stuck in your head and the way overplaying of popular bits of songs. I really hate when songs are overplayed.

Jack Stauber is an artist millions have heard and none know his name or any of his actual songs. They just know a 5 second clip from one of them.

A shame because what he should really be known for is his weird animations. My favorite is help

Shop! A pop-opera is really good as well, I think that's on the adult swim channel, not on his own.

I’ve got enough content to waste my time on, I don’t want to seek more, especially on an app that will further fuck with my ability to focus.

In addition to sinophobia, it's also cuz they're old as fuck and get defensive when they realize that things they like (youtube/insta) isn't the only hot new thing anymore. And they don't wanna spend the 30 mins it takes to learn it.

I've met a lot of cool internet boomers (millenials) on tiktok. So this isn't a blanket condemnation against them. But goddamn do the ones who complain about it almost always are cringe as fuck millenials.

Go eat your avocado toast and cry about rent.

I’m too old and angry to get into new types of social media this is why I’m on a text/markup based web forum.

Also I don’t care much to consume video content, never even got into youtube. Also I try to avoid platforms with algorithms/endless scrolling, just cant be good for me

[–] Skipper1402@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

May I ask how old are you?

Not even that old lol, only now getting into my latter 20s.

[–] AlpineSteakHouse@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

I hate that you're unnecessarily gimped to short videos. The short video format is designed for maximum engagement so it's the worst of social media distilled down.

It's just so busy and in my face. I've tried to get into it a few times and I just think it's really gross.

[–] Galli@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

It's a proprietary app operated by capitalists.

Youtube is older and more advanced in it's state of enshitiffication than tiktok but don't deceive yourself into thinking Tiktok will not take the same path.

I personally love tiktok, it's great on a my morning train commute where I have to switch trains, it's fun, I get a mix of shitposting, leftist politics and cute animals, it hasn't ruined my attention span or anything like. I still prefer long form entertainment like video essays and documentaries, but I tend to enjoy a wide variety of content styles and mediums so maybe I'm just a weird person 😅 I think it's amusing how many people shit on it, mostly I think because it's cool to shit on the popular thing, I understand that a lot of popularity is astroturfed, but I tend to have a an odd appreciation for popular culture, so again I think I'm might be weird, especially in a counterculture oriented community like this, but maybe I'm wrong? Also I sound like an anti-hipster and I promise I'm not just trying to be unique lol.

Can you recommend some cool things to follow? I get a lot of vegan content and some tech/ music but not much else.

Because it kept popping up notifications after I'd turned them off. Insta-uninstall.
