Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

I much prefer rounded corners. Also the big one is too big and the normal one is too small. Nice try Tim Apple. 🍏

Meh, without even jumping into either side on this one, all I gotta say is this...

They really need to start making phones flat again, where they can actually lay flat on a table without a case because of a stupid protruding camera assembly.

Better yet, a case shouldn't have to be an additional accessory, and phones shouldn't be built like eggshells. The shell of the device itself should be reasonably rugged out of the box. Phones end up more likely to overheat when you put a case/cover on them, as if engineers don't even consider this when they design phones anymore.

Yeah holy shit the camera bump making the bloody thing wobble all over the place when you put it down is just bad design imo

Whether or not I buy it doesn’t effect how shit it looks

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You say this after they change it to rounded corners? lol.

You’re about 3 years late in this one

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

New one is still square, still looks shit

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are you talking about the face of it or the edges?

The edges are rounded

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I want the whole edge to be rounded. The tiniest rounded corner and then a straight slab side doesn’t count.

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Then buy something with a round edge then? Idk what to tell you lol. Personally I think the round edges look like shit

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

It doesn’t matter if I buy it or not it will still look shit

Edit: also you are wrong rounded edges are much nicer and more successful

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I mean, you’re wrong so you’re definitely in the right sub

[–] Tenniswaffles@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you're not planning on buying it, why the fuck do you care? Why spend so much energy on something so pointless?

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Shape of object is important. Perceived ideals of physical attraction are important. Corporate ability to shape narrative is important. iPhone is culturally important.

Also it’s called !unpopularopinion not !veryimportantopinion

It’s deliberately mild and unimportant because that’s mildly amusing and not stressful, and everyone is way too stressed atm x

Nice deflection, but it's obvious from how furiously and continuously you defend your opinion that you're also pretty "stressed" about this lol.

[–] BURN@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I’m of the opposite opinion. The square corners look 1000x better and are easier to hold. Also I love my 14 Max and the size of it. Great for watching YouTube or other media on.

Haven't been keeping up with iPhones (Android user here). Which iPhone you like, and which one you don't? Just want to search the images to get what you're saying.

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I like the original iPhone X, the iPhone 11, and the iPhone XR. All of these had somewhat rounded sides.

I don’t like the iPhone 4, or the more recent iPhones 12, 13, 14, and now 15

[–] HidingCat@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Ah, I see what you mean now. I have to say, I do prefer the square sides. Wife has a nothing Phone 1 and I really like how it looks and feels.

[–] DScratch@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is an unpopular opinion, because you are incorrect.

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

On the contrary, I am massively correct but thank you for your input

[–] PlasmaDistortion@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That’s what a protective case is for, to hide it.

[–] Synthead@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And then if you don't like the case, put a phone around it

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

And then perhaps it would be sensible and also convenient to have a case around that phone, in case you drop it

[–] Vuipes@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They are switching between round/square design every few years to look different than previous generation. Which sells products better. Most loyal people will think its new unique design.

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Why not try hexagonal design instead? Much more convenient and human

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

That's not unpopular at all. Afaik most people like ugly rounded corners over square corners. But I would say that's fine if only Apple devices would be like that.

[–] guywithoutaname@geddit.social 1 points 1 year ago

Remember that if you think this opinion is unpopular, you should upvote. If you think this opinion is popular, downvote.

I have no fucking idea what anyone in this thread is talking about. The iPhone has and has always had rounded corners. Fucking everyone phone has round corners. The only phones I can even think of that didn't have rounded corners were a Windows phone from like a decade ago and the LG V30 that nobody bought.

What are they talking about anyone know?

[–] pimento64@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

The device is three-dimensional. They're talking about how the sides of the device are flat planes that are exactly perpendicular to the face and rear, rather than having contour on the z axis

[–] BrainisfineIthink@lemmy.one -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh I see. Okay then yes this is unpopular - people got sick of rounded backs because you can't use them flat, they wobble.

[–] pimento64@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The back can still be flat even if the sides are rounded, that doesn't make sense.

[–] BrainisfineIthink@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

Well that's why I shouldn't comment while trying to go to sleep then, isn't it?
