The Trine games are fine for couch co-op.

How has this thread been up for half a damn day and no one has mentioned the Borderlands series (Smoogy@kbin.social at least mentioned Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, but that was just a Borderlands 2 DLC which got re-released as a standalone.)

My wife and I put tons of hours into most of the the Borderlands series. I recommend playing them in release order.

1. Borderlands is a fun shoot n'loot that's got a loose plot, but it's not terribly deep. It's like a sci-fi road warrior feel. It's a fun co-op game with plenty of DLC and replay value. My personal favorite.

2. Borderlands 2 is all the fun of the first but they went all in on the writing and voice acting as well. It's tons of fun. Arguably the best of the series in every aspect. It's also tons of fun in couch co-op.

3. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is the third game but canonically it's the second. It's the same concept but with new anti-gravity mechanics and lasers. It's like Mad Max on the moon. I believe this started life as a DLC for BL2 before Gearbox decided to turn it into a fully fledged standalone game.

4. Borderlands 3: It was a fun game with some really great level design, but the writing seemed forced. Worth a playthrough to see where they take the storyline.

5. Tiny Tina's Wonderlands - Borderlands meets DnD. A spin-off of the aforementioned Assault on Dragon Keep DLC. The game itself is a lot of fun, but it's a miserable split screen co-op experience thanks to the terrible menu and inventory management system.

I had a lot of fun playing A Way Out, you can play with two controllers or keyboard and controller

Unravel 2 is awesome

You may like BroForce, a run-and-gun game where you unlock different characters as you go. I had a really good time with coop!

I love couch and online co-op! Here are some recommendations from my library

• A lot of Team17 games like Overcooked (including 2 and AYCE edition) or Movin' Out.
• Plate Up!
• Unrailed!
• Out of Space
• Magicka 2 (and 1 but its way harder)
• Wizard of Legend (hard game will need many tries)
• Castle Crashers
• Risk of Rain (1 is difficult or 2 which is easier)
• Sonic All Stars Racing Transform/Team Sonic Racing
• Spelunky (1 or 2)
• TMNT Shredder's Revenge

I hear Baldur's Gate 3 has local co-op.

Vampire survivors just came out on switch and is a lot of fun in co-op (they also added local co-op to the PC version)

If available for your plattform of choice the older "Army of two" titles were quite nice.

Diablo 3 has great couch co-op. D4 has it too, but that game sucks. D3 is better, especially if it's still new to you.

You should try Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime. I think it's up to 4 players, but essentially you both walk around a 2D side perspective ship and can control the different weapons and power systems.

You both have to run from station to station to navigate a large area and fight and defend from enemies and accomplish tasks. It starts easy and gets actually quite hard despite the art style. Cooperation is vital.

I'd also recommend Cook Serve Delicious, either the second or third, both are great games for one or two players. You essentially run a kitchen on a day by day basis. You have a menu of items you must cook for customers that come in throughout the day. Cooking requires pressing combinations of buttons to add ingredients depending on the customer's special order for the item.

In between customer orders you have to handle cleaning tasks and there are rush hours throughout the day where tons of customers arrive. When it's going full tilt you're rapidly taking orders, putting food together, and sending out food, it's extremely fun and as challenging as you want it to be since you can choose what you want to have on the menu if you'd like.

I like that you're purely focused on making the food and accomplishing tasks unlike Overcooked where the challenge is more about getting the ingredients from place to place and having only two players makes it ultra difficult. CSD scales much better to the amount of players.

My partner and I had fun playing Cat Quest 2 and Spiritfarer as coop games, in addition to It Takes Two which you mentioned. CQ2 is a cute action RPG and Spiritfarer is very chill, lots of sim/management tasks but with really beautiful characters, art, and story. Definitely very unlike Cuphead or Portal 2 but sometimes it's nice to switch things up a bit.

Grounded is pretty fun with friends.

I highly recommend Mercenary Kings. It's like Mega Man combined with Contra combined with Monster Hunter. There's a really satisfying loop of fun missions where you get upgrade materials so that you can upgrade, strategize, and equip for more fun missions.

For roguelikes, I'd highly recommend Streets of Rogue and Vagante. The former is wackier and a more open sandbox; the latter is a better challenge and perhaps a bit more satisfying to beat, but both are phenomenal. Streets of Rogue is sort of a twin stick shooter with tons of classes that play very differently, often compared to Deus Ex; and Vagante is like Spelunky crossed with Dark Souls.

Other than that, those Quake remasters have split-screen for co-op and versus multiplayer. A friend and I just started Quake 1 recently.

As a bonus, all of the above are also online multiplayer.

Portal reloaded just added co op. Its also free on steam.

Heavenltly Bodies is an astronaut simulator. You just have to pull levers and connect things, but with really cluncky and funny phisics which will make you LOL when someone pushes someone else the wrong way and they float into outer space and die.

There's also a level with a mini spaceship that only has two seats. This level is great with at least 3 people. "Better hold on tight, buddy!".

i really love stardew valley for a cozy co-op game. for something a little weirder and darker, crawl is a blast.

Darksiders Genesis is a fantastic co-op game.

Unraveled 2 is an amazing and beautiful game. If you liked the other games you listed, then you'll love Unraveled 2.

Might want to check out beat 'em up categories as well. I really enjoy River City Girls 1 and 2 (2 having more QoL improvements), but it might not be for everyone.
Similar to what was said about overcooked/CSD, there's also Plate Up! which I enjoy but am not sure myself how local co-op is

There's a pair of Tomb Raider isometric games that have decent local co-op. Guardian of Light and something else...

Sackboy's Big Adventure, and Super Mario 3D World. Both are similar.

Rayman Origins and Legends.
