It’s not just Manchin that voted for it, other Democrats did too.
Heads up for those that follow it (aka trans folks), Biden took a turn on trans rights as well. He now supports bans on “gender affirming surgeries for trans kids”. Which is where Republicans started their crusade to try to ban all gender-affirming care for trans folks. (Yes, I know that slippery slope isn’t a valid argument, but in this case they actually started there and what they are now advocating for).
And people wonder why so many gender non-conforming folks are refusing to vote for Biden.
We all know that "gender affirming surgeries" aren't being performed on minors. Publicly being against something that doesn't happen seems more like a calculated way to get support from ~~morons~~ low-information voters.
Like literally everyone who isn't a rich white Christian man, trans lives will get significantly worse under Trump. Rational self-interest should be reason enough to vote for Biden.
Gender affirming surgeries are given to cis minors all the time. We just call it plastic surgery.
Obviously in this context we're talking about gender affirming surgeries for trans children, not Aughbreylynn's dad buying her bolt-ons for her 16th birthday.
They are being performed in very low numbers (like single digits in the country, and in very extreme cases). But it shouldn’t matter, no part of government should be interfering in medical decisions, even if they’re very rare. Ever. The Republicans in our state started with that and trans women in sports, and ended with proposing constitutional amendments banning gay marriage. They’ve already banned trans health care for minors and started banning books in schools. And they’ve proposed banning all gender affirming care in the state and ran out of time.
Rational self interest is what made me vote for Hillary and Biden the first time. I’m in a deep red state, my state’s electoral college votes are going to Trump without a doubt. I’ll be voting Democrat down ticket, because in my state the national elections won’t matter. It’s the state banning gender affirming care, banning abortions, privatizing schools, etc. And Democrats can’t stop it at the state level (Republicans have supermajorities in both legislatures and will hold the governorship for at least 2 more years), and at the national level they don’t seem to try to care to try to stop it either. If I had resources, I would have already left the country. Many of my friends have.
So my vote isn’t going to count either way, it might as well try to serve as a wake up call to the Democrats that they have to be more than “not really fascist” to win an election.
I don't wonder that, because we're not refusing to vote for Biden. Except for the suicidal trans doomers who are willing to throw their lives away making a political statement. Which is absolutely tragic, but also fuck them for risking all our lives too.
It'll be fun revisiting this if Biden somehow wins and project 2025 policies still get implemented. Then it'll be on to the next issue we totally have to vote blue to stop
It’s that strange moment when bodily autonomy does not include voting your conscience. /s
Oh they certainly have the right to vote for fascism. And I have the right to call them assholes about it. That's the democratic process in action. Democracy isn't when your fascist ideas are never challenged, that's fascism.
You mean like when you shut down primaries so you’re guaranteed a victory?
I didn't do that, the DNC did that. I may be the ally of the DNC today, but my affections are fickle. I will aid the DNC when and only when it suits my goals. One day I will call Biden a corrupt fascist puppet, and the next I will defend him from the same accusations. The difference is that I will attack him when there's a chance to get someone better on the blue side of the vote, and I'll defend him when the candidates are set and he's the only one who can defeat Trump. It is all a utilitarian calculation to me. I am not so privileged as to bring feelings into my decision about who to vote for. There are more important things at stake than how I feel.
Oh, I don’t disagree with you. But understand that sitting in a place where a national election has an effect on you is a privilege. Project 2025 is already becoming a reality in my state, and there’s nothing that’s going to stop it. Trump, Biden, doesn’t matter to me. I’m gonna sound like a doomer, but queer people in my state like me are already fucked. And Democrats at the state level can’t do anything because Republicans have supermajorities in both legislative houses and they hold the governorship. My state will go for Trump. My vote for president will not matter. It’s gonna be third party (probably socialist). Don’t tell me I “have to vote for Biden”, I’ve made my calculation too.
