If this was in the UK, there’d be a fear among certain groups that the “native” population was going to be replaced by immigrants. I wonder if there’s anything similar in Japan?

Ho boy, wait until you find out about how xenophobic Japan is.

Speaking very broadly here, I define conservatism as needing an out of power group to shame/ostracize. Looking at Japan, 98% of the population is ethnically Japanese. 2% is immigrants. Hell I bet most of the people reading this already know the Japanese word for outsider without me even having to say it. It's a lock that Japanese conservatives are every bit as shitty as English or American conservatives.

Japanese ultranationalists love a good political assassination

Gaijin. I think this knowledge was much more common on the internet a long time ago tbh.

[–] Rolder@reddthat.com 5 points 1 year ago

The most common one is “Gaijin” which is the impolite word for foreigner.

[–] Carighan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

That happened a long long time ago in the UK, in like 40 AD or so.

Japans immigration is actually surprisingly strict no ? I feel as the population ages more and more those laws will get a little more lax.

[–] Blamemeta@lemmy.world -3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I mean, that's literally what's happening? I'm not sure what you mean there.

[–] SuperIce@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm not sure how 2% of the population being immigrants is replacing the native population.

[–] Blamemeta@lemmy.world -3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

2% today, but if the trend continues though

[–] spiderman@ani.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

you know it's gonna die anyways since the population growth rate is declining in an all time low right?

[–] Blamemeta@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

That's a problem that came be fixed. But to those who like Japan and Japanese culture, immigration is not something that can be undone.

[–] ladel@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well, yeah I guess it is in a way. But more like framing it as a negative thing, a fear of the loss of Japanese values and culture as the foreigners bring in their own.

[–] Blamemeta@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago

But if you like Japan as it is, that's a valid concern. It's not immigrants magically forget where they come from.
