When I just see my TV taking Linux updates it makes me feel so cozy. For context sake I have a veroV running osmc.

After the first round of community feedback, we’re happy to share the second release candidate for GIMP 3.0! People gave us really helpful feedback from the first release candidate and we were able to fix a lot of bugs.

EDIT - UPDATE: Booting live Windows11 USB has worked and BIOS has been updated (but holy cow, Linux live USB feels like it's running on SSD while Windows live USB feels like it's running from floppy disk)

Hi, I have a Yoga Slim 6 14APU8 - Type 82X3 laptop with Fedora Workstation 41 and I've tried to go and update my BIOS but unfortunately they only offer the .exe file to do it from within Windows. I don't want to install Windows just to update my BIOS. I honestly though it will be a matter of few minutes by me just copying the BIOS file on a USB drive and then installing it directly from within BIOS as usual on other devices...

I've tried the sudo fwupdmgr update command but it just says that there is nothing that can be updated.

My current BIOS version is M4CN30WW and the new one is M4CN36WW.

I've tried searching for how to do this and I've found multiple guides using geteltorito but they all say to download the .iso and not the .exe version of the BIOS file but I can't find the .iso version anywhere on their website, or am I just blind or is there some other way to do this?

I'm on Linux for a couple of years and I love it. Distrohoping never interested me though, I'm content with my flavour. But I need to reinstall my OS soon and it gives me headaches. So many settings I changed, applications I installed, configured and forgot about.
Now I read about all you guys constantly distrohopping for fun, how do you even do this? Do you start from scratch, explore everything and leave after months of putting in all the work of making an OS your own!? Or do you just casually check it out a couple of days? What do you do with all your music, pictures, addons, portable software?

I just got Huenicorn installed on my Linux desktop. Been struggling to get hue bridge to sync.

1. I opened the huenicorn executable
2. Typed my Hue Bridge's IP Address
3. When I'm at the API Key screen, I pressed "I don't have credentials yet"
4. It tells me to press the central button on my Hue Bridge and I have one minute to press "Register new user". Tried it several times with no luck.

The Hue Bridge doesn't seem to be an issue as today I got my light strip to sync to it.

I have a Tinker Edge T as a server, and it's running Mendel Linux which is a default debian-based OS recommended by the manufacturer. One thing I really don't like is the fact that if you plug in an HDMI cable and USB keyword, it will always give you access to a terminal as the default user, which doesn't even need a password to become root either. Is there a general Linux way to set a password for the GUI like you can on regular desktop Linux, or otherwise require authentication before you get a terminal or any other functionality, so someone can't just plug an HDMI cable and keyboard into the device and have root access to the entire device?

Dopo aver con successo e soddisfazione convertito il mio vecchio MacbookPro a Linux (precisamente con ⁨@ufficiozero⁩ ) ora mi piacerebbe convertire anche il mio MacMini  M1 affiancando Linux a macOs. Da ciò che leggo in giro, al momento non sembra possibile. Qualcuno ha idea se prima o poi (e quando)  questo sarà possibile?

I'm using an XPS 13 9350 with 16GB of RAM and the Intel Graphics 540. I am using Fedora KDE spin. When I am using computer, either randomly or when I start a program, my computer will slow down and quickly fully freeze. In this state, the only thing I can do is shut it down. Is there any way to make it so that a program is killed, or something else that doesn't fully stop my system?

I'm currently looking for a new OS, coming from KDE neon and I like it, but the fact I have to FUCKING restart because someone decided to push an OS update that broke my previous install, now the OS freezes my whole PC (never did before!) and I have to restart.

I'm looking for good apps support so Debian? Idk Using it for daily usage (Android/games development) and gaming.

I'm also looking for:

• Wobbly windows (yes useless but cool lol)
• Good customization
• KDE connect support (a must)
• Krunner or equivalent (MacOS like search)
• Idk?

In b4 "You wont make a profit"... i know, i want to use my computer to heat my apartment. i figure that even if i'm making a "loss" each month on the mining it's still cheaper than running my apartments electric heaters when you account for the sold (or not) bitcoin.

I've been doing well keeping things warm by Folding at home on the CPU but apparently AMD GPUs aren't supported for that and i want to put my GPU to work too.

I briefly mined some litecoin in like 2013/14 when BTC was just about popping off. other than that i have no mining experience (and i would have been using windows back then)

Need to sort something soon, Jan and Feb are probs the coldest months in the UK and i have gotten this far this year without using the heaters

tuifoop is a terminal puzzle game.

It is a clone of Swell Foop, written in Bash.

The aim is to remove as many cells as possible (or even all cells) from a grid. The user navigates in the grid using the navigation keys, and can select a cell to remove. Cells can be removed in clusters of more than one cells adjacent to each other. Single cells cannot be removed.

When selected, a cluster of adjacent similar cells is removed, and the remaining cells above take their place.

When a whole grid column is cleared, it collapses and the remaining columns to the right shift to fill its place.

IMPORTANT:

Most themes are based in emoji characters.

In order for the emoji characters to be rendered correctly, the user must:

1. Make sure that emoji characters are supported in their terminal.

2. Make sure suitable mono font is used to render the grid and the emoji backgound properly. For instance, ubuntu font can support emojis, however the font background is not rendered correctly, therefore the grid cursor (where the cursor is placd in the cell matrix) cannot be seen in the terminal window.

If a problem is encountered as this is concerned, it is easily resolved by changing to a more appropriate font through terminal application's preferences or configuration, so that the emojis as well as the grid are rendered correctly.

When it comes to most "normie" use cases in Linux (and I am including the self hosting community here as well), people prefer working on well established and supported distributions such as Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora, etc.

Generally, people would discourage the use of bleeding edge distributions like Arch, Gentoo, etc. as it might break something if the user doesn't know what they're doing. Yet, I have seen instances where this has been used by hobbyists and companies. (ChromeOS is a Gentoo corruption, and SteamOS is an arch derivative).

What about Linux from Scratch (LFS)? Under what circumstances would one want to build Linux from the ground up for production or commercial purposes?

i guess it would make sense because the main philosophy behind cinnamon is to bring back old gnome2 and despise new gnome. it's almost like they're trying to make it better (i believe both cinnamon and gnome are awesome!!) and eventually make cinnamon the default de someday, has there been any sort of rivalry between the devs of both desktop environments?? like, i know it's not possible but what if a gnome update wouldn't let you install cinnamon and vice versa??

Would it be possible to have a linux DE with that high quality like macOS? The last 3 years i did a lot of distro hopping. Im really Happy with gnome and ubuntu now ( reason was the rocm Installation script for my 7900xtx). Currently i donate whenever i use a Software more frequent. So i also would pay for a such good Look like on an iMac from my wife. Currently i use 4k Resolution and coloring settings with my spyder color camera. Edit: Im talking about sharpness of font rendering

As per the title, I have a newcomer into linux that handed me a laptop to install with a recommended distro.

Being a user very much used to windows, I opted to install Lnx Mint, considering this person may also want to game a little bit in the future.

Install went flawlessly but the screen resolution is so high the fonts and desktop icons were so small it made difficult to read the icons text.

I tried to tweak the icons and fonts to usuable size but the overall feel of the desktop is still... stretched, for lack of a better word.

The laptop is a mistery brand, running a full Intel machine. And I say mistery because when I took a look into windows, the touchpad was identified as a Lenovo, but the machine is just an unbranded generic one.

Hardware profile

• Intel Core i3-500SU
• 8GB RAM
• Intel HD Graphics 5500 (BDW GT2), 1920x1080 max resolution, on 14.2 inch screen

Any suggestions on how to solve the issue?

The solution was a mix between changing desktop environment (Mate => Cinnamon) and adjusting the font size and scaling factor.

As always, Linux rules and the community behind it is made up of bosses!
