Summary

A U.S. appeals court ruled that the Justice Department can release Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report on Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

While a Judge Aileen Cannon's temporary block remains in effect for three more days, the decision paves the way for the report’s release as early as next week.

The report will focus on the 2020 election probe, as the classified documents portion remains restricted to Congress due to ongoing legal cases.

Trump denies wrongdoing, calling the investigations politically motivated.

Summary

The U.S. added 256,000 jobs in December, lowering the unemployment rate to 4.1%, outperforming expectations and reflecting a resilient labor market as President Biden leaves office.

Despite earlier inflation overshadowing a strong labor recovery post-COVID, hiring remains steady, layoffs subdued, and job openings rising.

Forecasters predict gradual hiring growth in 2025, with small-business optimism and easing Federal Reserve policies driving gains.

Economic indicators, like increased consumer borrowing for auto purchases, suggest mixed but improving confidence.

I’m sure there are a few hurdles, but wondering what is the biggest reason that keeps us back at this moment as the most pressing thing. Is it that the technology just isn’t there yet? Or is it because of legal complications, international treaties and all that? Is it just not financially feasible to do at this present time with the technology we do have? That we could do it, in theory, but the ROI is too low?

This quick cycling between very wet and very dry periods — one example of what scientists have come to call “weather whiplash” — creates prime conditions for wildfires: The rain encourages an abundance of brush and grass, and once all that vegetation dries out, it only takes a spark and a gust of wind to fuel a deadly fire. That’s what happened in Los Angeles County this week, when a fierce windstorm fueled the Palisades and Eaton fires, which as of Wednesday night had killed at least five people, destroyed more than 2,000 buildings, and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes.

The kind of weather whiplash that fueled the fires is only becoming more common, and not just in the United States. A new analysis in the peer-reviewed academic journal Nature Reviews Earth & Environment has found that rapid shifts between heavy rain and drought (and vice versa) are becoming more intense — and the trend is unfolding faster than climate models have projected. Across the world’s land area, weather whiplash within three-month periods has increased by 31 to 66 percent since the mid-20th century, according to the research. That means that most places around the world find themselves getting both wetter and drier in quick succession, a dangerous combination that can lead to landslides, crop losses, and even the spread of diseases.

So I'm not sure if this is age related or not. I'm a 21 year old male, maybe you could share your age as well.

So basically for a long time (probably my whole life) I had this deep longing/fantasy to live at a different place than the one I'm living right now. As if I don't belong where I'm from and need to be somewhere else to truly feel home. I'm from northern Germany and always had the deep desire of traveling places.

When me and my family went on vacation when I was a kid for example when we flew to Egypt it felt like a wonderful dream as if I was in heaven or something. I just love when I'm in totally different environments like coming from the cold Germany into a tropically warm climate, in a country that is very different, with very different culture and mentality in this beautiful and gigantic hotel resort.

Idk how to describe it but it's like my core desire got fulfilled.

I never felt home here in Germany and my deep desire always was to live somewhere else where there is a very different culture and environment.

A significant amount of time I always wanted to go to America. I've never been there so far unfortunately.

But I always had this feeling that I didn't felt right where I'm from and was always searching for this place where I can feel home, where it's wholesome and I feel freed from all worries, where I have deep/meaningful connections and can fully live in joy and embrace every little moment of life in this deeply joyful way like living like a child again.

I assume a lot of this is probably just some psychological phenomenon that is inducing a fake/unreal fantasy. I assume even if I could move to some other country I might not feel as joyful like when I was a kid and even if I do, at some point it might not feel special anymore and it might not be like I hoped.

So maybe this is just this classic "the grass seems always greener on the other side" thing and in reality it might not be like that.

But I wonder does any of you also have this deep inner fantasy of living in a different place/culture where it kinda feels magical to live and you have ultimate happiness? It might be something unrealistic or a place that doesn't exist but it's like a deep feeling in me and I wonder if others also have it. Maybe it goes deeper and it is this "leftover" from childhood that I remember and that I'm longing for? Maybe it's a fantasy of being a kid again?

I was curious, does anyone know if there is a Fediverse alternative to sites like IMDb or TMDB/TheTVDB—something that allows users to discover, review, and discuss movies and TV shows in a decentralized way.

I know about Moviewyrm, which is a concept of a potential fork of Bookwyrm.

While it’s a great start, it is just the concept of a potential platform.

If there isn't one, then has anyone ever considered building a more robust movie/TV platform for the Fediverse?

Or better yet, is something already in the works that I might have missed?

I’d love to see a project like this come to life, but unfortunately, I lack the knowledge, time, and energy to start it myself.

However, I’d be really interested in discussions or ideas for how such a platform could be built.

Summary

In 2024, global temperatures rose 1.6°C above preindustrial levels, surpassing the 1.5°C Paris Agreement threshold for the first time.

The rise, driven by fossil fuel emissions and intensified by El Niño, caused extreme weather, record heatwaves, and widespread human suffering.

Experts warn the planet is on track for catastrophic 2.7°C heating by 2100 unless emissions drop 45% by 2030.

Despite renewable energy advances, 2024 saw record carbon emissions.

The office of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a petition Oct. 29 claiming Granados had prescribed puberty blockers and hormones to minors for gender transition — health care the state made illegal beginning Sept. 1, 2023. The court filing accuses Granados of providing gender-affirming care under the false pretense of treating precocious puberty.

Paxton filed the lawsuit in Kaufman County near Dallas, about 650 miles east of El Paso, where one of the 21 patients in the court filing is said to reside. Granados is one of three doctors Paxton sued last year for allegedly providing gender-affirming care to minors.

The sentencing procedure for our first criminally convicted felon President is due to begin at 9:30 AM Eastern/6:30 AM Pacific.

Let's keep all the comments and posts wrangled here.

Live coverage should be... Oh, I'm just going to say "everywhere". CNN, MSNBC, etc. etc. This is history so everyone should have it.

Edit As expected, Trump is appearing remotely.

https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/trump-hush-money-sentencing-01-10-25/index.html

Prosecution is asking for more time to read the probation report, apparently they haven't read it yet.

Prosecution wants "Unconditional Discharge" then layed out every reason why it shouldn't be unconditional. Trump showed no remorse, believes he's above the law, that the court has no authority over him.

Defense is now making their presentation.

Trump is now speaking, underlining everything the Prosecution stated. Unrepentant, defiant, disrespectful.

Judge Merchan is addressing the court and CNN cuts away to cover California. LOL.

No live broadcasting the sentencing, but audio will be available after.

7:09 AM - Sentenced to Unconditional Discharge.

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (AP) — A man who fired a gun inside a restaurant in the nation’s capital after a fake online conspiracy theory called “Pizzagate” motivated him to do so nearly a decade ago was shot and killed by North Carolina police during a weekend traffic stop.

Edgar Maddison Welch was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by officers in Kannapolis on Saturday night, according to a Kannapolis Police Department news release. One of the officers recognized the car as the vehicle of someone he had arrested and who had an outstanding warrant for a felony probation violation — Welch, police said.

When the officers approached the vehicle to arrest Welch, police said the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at one of the officers. After he was instructed to drop the weapon but didn’t, two officers shot Welch, authorities said.

Emergency responders took Welch to the hospital and he died from his injuries two days later, according to the release. None of the officers, nor the driver and another passenger, were injured.

In 2016, authorities said, Welch drove from North Carolina with an assault rifle to Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Washington after believing an unfounded conspiracy theory that prominent Democrats were operating a child sex trafficking ring out of the pizzeria. The fake theory, dubbed “Pizzagate,” began circulating online during the 2016 presidential election.

He entered the restaurant armed, and as customers fled the scene, Welch shot at a locked closet inside. After realizing there were no children held captive in the pizzeria, Welch peacefully surrendered. No one was injured.

At the time, Comet Ping Pong’s owner, James Alefantis, said the conspiracy theory and subsequent violence from it traumatized him and his staff.

Welch later pled guilty to interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition and assault with a dangerous weapon in 2017. His judge, now Supreme Court Justice Kentaji Brown Jackson, subsequently sentenced him to four years in prison.

City of Kannapolis communications director Annette Privette Keller confirmed the man who died was the same one involved in the “Pizzagate” incident.

The shooting death of Welch, a resident of Salisbury, is under review by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the officers who fired at him are on administrative leave, per the department’s protocol.
