There is a rumor that admins can read your direct messages. This is essentially true. In essence, if someone hosts their own instance they can always look in their own database. But the general working of the software is that admins can only read if someone reports content to them. Anyway, this is a good reminder to never use direct messages for sensitive information, on any social media system. And yes, dishonest people can also start Mastodon communities. Awareness is good for making informed choices.

Glad he called it out (although quite mildly) because this is something the general public won't be ready for in social media. I say this is mild because at the worst end of the scale a malicious/racist/violent person who hates certain types of people could setup a server just for that and let it run as a paradise while collecting data on all the people who join. Email addresses, IP, local groups/meetups and if they were really motivated could probably turn off metadata stripping, literal goldmine of data if you run an instance

I'm not too keen on this whole SPREAD OUT AND JOIN THE INSTANCE THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU because that sounds like a great way to force people into the hands of shitty (or as mentioned malicious) admins who don't care if they shut down their instance one day without warning.

I think it's more prudent to advise people to organize with their group and start their own instance which gives them more protections. Know your admins, a big benefit of the fediverse.

I was at a wedding when a friend called me. They said their brother was "redoing his finances" and they needed about a $1,000 and would pay me back after. I was actually apologetic I couldn't help them it was just too much and I'm at a wedding, not a good time to talk about this in detail. That was all good and I went on my way but it did seem like a weird request.

I get back home and hear back from this friend. Turns out their brothers FB was hacked and who they thought was their brother was actually a malicious actor who gained access to the account. They managed to convince them to transfer about $800 VIA a bitcoin ATM since they were "redoing their finances in crypto" and obviously lost it all. Brother contacted them the next day when they regained access and saw all the messages the bad actor sent.

It was so surreal because at the wedding I didn't even question that THEY might be getting scammed and I almost got involved! They didn't mention crypto at the time but man do I ever wish they did. Obviously hindsight in 20/20 but I like to believe that it would've triggered the warning bells in my head.

I guess my point is that you don't even need to be talking to the scammer to get scammed.

What is offensive is just a personal perspective so you're gunna get mixed answers. Ultimately it will always come down to what the person meant by it and how the other person perceives it, by default that is a mixed bag of emotions and reactions.

I'll note that I do something I call synonym panic where I get to a keyword in a sentence and I kind of blank, start struggling for words then start cycling through all the possible words I could use it and often land on some pretty odd sentences. Referring to the 'past' as the 'back-timies' as a prime example or more commonly just saying the 'stuff' or 'things' because I'm afraid I'm about to choose the wrong word.

That's what the collectables market is before crypto was even a thing. Highest risk with the highest reward, there is nothing more volatile than collectables because the same event that causes it to lose value could mean massive value gain to others, think murder houses. It's the ebb and flow of human perception and when you add in decentralized, unregulated crypto we get the digital collectables market which will always be like this.

There is no 'doomed' because the product possibilities are infinite and the value of them exists within a bubble, new NFT use cases will be separate from every one before them. "NFT'd links to art" are just a terrible use case through and through.

Are you able to use proxy servers going from: you>Tor>VPN/Proxy>Destination?

I use this path when trying to appear normal online since Tor does anything but, there's limitations sure but if you wanna be anonymous while not sticking out terribly then it's a great method imo. Would be curious to hear if anyone does anything similar.

In Canada you can get letters from your ISP on behalf of a media company essentially stating it was detected that the IP for this address has been downloading copyrighted content. They are unenforceable but if you wanna avoid them then a VPN works like a charm.

Would be nice to have a feature that automatically creates a link to access a community from the instance you're on. Like if you just link https://sopuli.xyz/c/moderatepolitics then I could hover over it or click a button to generate a link so I don't have to leave my instance to view it.

Yes but as with most things with proton they lock down the good features behind a payment model, to each their own I know we all gotta make money somehow.

I've been using cryptpad.fr for a while which is opensource and self-hostable, you canmake multiple calendars and share among a team but proton has more features otherwise. Obviously not one to one with proton since they are an email service and this is an office suite but they compliment each other nicely. I only use proton for their email since I have simple needs.

Feels like there's a lot of delightfully malicious things to be done with this info.

Holy shit that's extensive! See a lot of the projects I know about on there.

I would use DDG (or any privacy search provider like startpage or Mojeek ) in Whonix and you want actual protections. Putting your faith in a for profit company to keep your safe when using their free online services ends in your being exploited somehow, somewhere, everytime. It's inevitable if you're the product.

ADHD is a spectrum that presents differently in sexes but can also have other disorders closely related. My ADHD made me more reclusive and not very spontaneous because of a comorbid with anxiety, over thinking everything. I got treated for my anxiety and was once that faded my impulsiveness was uncontrollable. I was well into adulthood before I got treated and I regret waiting so long just because of how effective it was, Atomoxetine+Vyvanse has been awesome.

I obviously can't diagnose you over the internet and I'm missing a few degrees to be qualified but after reading your comments here it sounds like a route you should investigate further with a dr.
