Really having a hard time addressing the topic at hand, aren't you?

Sexism is prevalent in right-wing spaces as well. I'd say it's more prevalent and predictable in right wing spaces, but it's still prevalent and IMO far more disappointing in leftist spaces from people who supposedly claim they're progressive.

Already did in another comment in this thread, take a look. Cited with the link to the paper.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1635092/ <--- by all means, look up similar studies done in more recent years and you'll find the same fundamental patterns.

This is a discussion about a woman who was murdered, so why on earth would you bring up irrelevant stats? There's a reason why you're deflecting. Your only contribution to this discussion is a comment telling me to "stfu" because you'd rather deflect than confront sexism. The older I get, the less surprised I am to see not so low-key sexism in leftist spaces. You could have made any kind of comment in this thread and all you decided on was "bUt wHat aBoUT [irrelevant subject]".

It's so disappointing, frustrating and downright exhausting. I fully expect this kind of rhetoric from conservatives and liberals but it just sucks to hear it in leftist spaces by people who claim to be allies to marginalized people. I honestly think I'm just going to take a break from online spaces like Lemmy and stick to my one community that just happens to be created/lead by a woman. Shit like this is why so many leftist websites and local clubs just turn into a hangout for mostly white guys cluelessly wondering why there's so little diversity. ✌🏾

The problem is that blocking only solves the smaller issue and basically sweeps Lemmy's sexism under the rug instead of addressing why sexism is so prevalent in leftist spaces. And I don't think it's up to women to educate men on this, it's up to men to educate other men on this. We have to keep in mind how exhausting it is for women to 1) deal with sexist shit and then 2) basically be told they have to teach men about [traumatic things that they've been through and shouldn't have to re-experience by talking to men]

Discord doesn't require a phone number to use it and there's tons of servers that don't require phone number verification. The vast majority of servers I'm in have no phone number requirement. Signal straight will not work without your phone number, in any capacity. I'm sure you'd trust Signal over Discord with your phone number any day of the week but as I said, that's an irrelevant point because we're talking about why people are more attracted to Discord over Signal. Slacks vs ugly cargo pants.

I said that the reason they DONT is because other platform dont have the advertising budget, nor the user base to make users jump ship.

Have you ever seen an ad for Discord? I haven't see one before and I only know about it through word of mouth. There's nothing stopping people from creating Signal groups for various hobbies and including a Signal link in their social media page.

Refusing to use Discord might be noble from a privacy/security point of view but from a broader perspective, you're significantly limiting your social interactions and not because of the people but the app the people are using to communicate with. It's like not using a phone at all because pretty much any phone is a privacy/security issue.

My guess is Telegram's being bankrolled by entities that are willing to eat the cost of this kind of data usage.

Exactly. And they didn't even give the 25 MB limit to every user. Some users were always stuck at 8 MB, and others 25 MB. I'm the latter and I was blown away at the decision to cut the file size limit down to 1/3rd of what I was used to.

https://8mb.video/

^ This website will compress videos down to 8 MB but the video quality ends up being awful, plus I'm not so sure how I feel about the privacy/security issues of uploading personal videos to some rando website so they can be compressed.

That's a feature that was implemented what, 1 or 2 years ago when Signal's been around for a decade?

You can't possibly expect people to just jump from one social app to another that has such a relatively small user base and little familiarity. Entire Discord servers would have to jump ship and it would just be a nightmare for most people.

What Discord prioritizes, Signal treats as an afterthought. Things like group chat, video chat, GIF usage, etc, Signal has never really prioritized.

Discord's mobile and PC apps both allow users to select GIFs within the application, whereas only Signal's mobile app allows users to select GIFs within the application and Signal's desktop app doesn't allow for in-app GIF selection. If you're reading this thinking "who tf cares about stupid stuff like that?", you're completely missing the point because regular ass users care about stuff like that and they totally will say "fuck that" to an alternative if it doesn't have features like this. Why doesn't Signal incorporate in-app GIF selection for its desktop app? I'm sure it will be eventually implemented but dragging their heels like this for popular features and then having the nerve to ask "why aren't people flocking to us instead of Discord/WhatsApp" is such an out of touch question to ask.

When open source developers ask for feedback from regular users and their response to said feedback is"ACKSHUALLY it's your fault, not the application's fault", as it often is, it's no surprise that their software never gains traction. It's like a guy who wears cargo pants to a formal affair and then gets into an argument over attire because in his mind, cargo pants = more pockets = superior, completely oblivious to every other factor.

Another thing-- Signal requires your phone number, Discord doesn't. I know right away folks are going to rage about how Discord is the real privacy nightmare, not Signal. I don't disagree, but the average user is just going to be more wary about being forced to give up their phone number in order to use Signal, even if the software now allows them to hide it.

I've always seen people referencing just a single photo or video of Trump with Epstein & Co., so I felt it was necessary to create this compilation to show that Trump's relationship with these people extended far beyond being mere acquaintances.

If you have any feedback, I'm all ears. My channel isn't monetized so I just make whatever I feel like and it's nice not having money in the equation. No monetization means I can do little weird things like creating this video in the style of Goodfellas, just to show people that at the end of the day, the only difference between Trump and a two-bit gangster is that he inherited billions of dollars. Apart from that, he still has and continues to conduct himself like a boorish fool.

I recently posted a video of the Jaleel Stallings case but a number of people without Google accounts want to see the video, and so I'd like to post it on another platform. Any recommendations?

The City of Minneapolis has agreed to pay $1.5 million to Jaleel Stallings, a St. Paul veteran who sued the city after being acquitted of eight felony charges when he shot in self-defense at Minneapolis police officers during the George Floyd protests.

Stallings was acquitted by a jury last summer for the charges after evidence presented directly contradicted accounts provided by police and laid out by prosecutors. Stallings, who was protesting the death of George Floyd on May 30, 2020, said he didn't know the people firing plastic bullets at him from an unmarked cargo van were police, so he fired back.

Once Stalling realized it was police, he laid his weapon down and laid down on the ground. Surveillance video and bodycam footage shows SWAT officers kick, punch and knee Stallings repeatedly in the face and head after he had already surrendered. Officers initially claimed that he had resisted arrest, with a news release describing it as a "struggle."

Stallings suffered a fracture near his eye, as well as cuts and bruises.

The SWAT team involved with Stallings were driving in an unmarked cargo van, firing 40-mm marking rounds at civilians out after curfew. Body camera footage showed officers talking about "hunting" protesters. That's when they eventually beat Stallings and another person he was with after Stallings fired his weapon back at them. He previously stated that he "purposely" missed them.

No Minneapolis Police Department officer has been formally disciplined for their actions during the May 2020 riots as of this day, though one female officer was disciplined for speaking to a reporter anonymously.

Arnulfo Reyes can’t forgive law enforcement for taking more than an hour to stop a gunman who killed 11 fourth-graders in his Texas elementary school classroom and 10 other people in the next room, he told ABC.

Reyes, a teacher who was shot twice during the May 24 massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, recalled the horror that unfolded in his room and an adjoining one and spoke, too, in interviews that aired Monday and Tuesday about his mounting anger toward law enforcement responders.
