Instagram has like over a billion users. They definitely aren't automatically signing people up.

Jury is still out on Twitter. It very well could fail.
It just didn't happen the instant Musk entered the building. This type of thing usually happens on longer timeframes. Digg died unusually fast.
I mean some people just want a social media app without Elon Musk...
You still have to create a profile on Threads when you set it up. Instagram is waaaay bigger than just 10 million users.
If an instance does off because Meta won't defederates from it, then it probably would have died off anyway.
They do if they're collector's boxes. Usually the same for regular editions.
It would be a shame if subreddits changed their rules to make photos of Tiennamen Square mandatory in all posts.
Defederating helps because it limits their reach to a wider community. They're currently a small group because Lemmy and Kbin are new. If they're left unchecked, they will grow.
You are never going to eliminate groups like this, but deplatforming them prevents their ability to radicalize more people.
Banning white supremacy is not the same thing as making an echo chamber.
Support for Trump is inherently racist, homophobic, transphobic, and misogynistic.
