I spent hours trying to set up the GUI and couldn't get it to work. Tried the AUR, Flatpack etc and no luck. In the end I just set up the command line version of open VPN with an Alias.

I was apout to suggest this, I get leg cramps semi often and this tip is a life saver.

Yeah it's a bit of a nightmare. If you want to play the base game without any mods, I think it should work fine just using Proton GE now. But if you want the HD texture pack you have to jump through so many hoops.

I imagine in a few months the process will be streamlined, but this seems to be the only way to get it working at the moment.

Original Source GMorb On Reddit, just posting these here in case it helps anyone

  1. From desktop mode, download the offline installer files for RE 1 (exe and bin) from GOG.

  2. Download and install Lutris via the Discovery App.

  3. Download this lutris script (Thanks to eskay993)

https://github.com/eskay993/gamefiles/raw/main/resident-evil/resident-evil-gog.zip

  1. Download the Mediakite Patch.

https://www.nexusmods.com/residentevil1996/mods/25?tab=files&file_id=61

  1. Run lutris and add a game using the plus sign at the top and select "Install from a local install script."

5.b Drag the script file downloaded in step 3 into the lutris search bar and click install. You will see a second window prompting you to install "GOG with Classic REbirth." Click install again.

5.c Another window will pop up, and here you can modify the settings to your liking or just click continue.

5.d The next window will prompt you to locate the Resident Evil GOG setup exe, which was downloaded in step 1 and the Mediakite Patch from step 4. Drag the RE 1 exe files into the first search bar and the Mediakite Patch into the second search bar, then click install.

5.e Once again, ANOTHER window will pop up asking if you want the original experience or or high quality videos. Of course, you will want to leave the settings as is and click continue. Unless you want low res videos (which defeats the purpose of Seamless HD)

Lutris will begin running the installers once it's done. Click on close, and dont launch the game just yet.

  1. Download this Resident Evil HD file (654.22mb file) by teamx

https://www.moddb.com/downloads/start/224828?referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.moddb.com%2Fmods%2Fresident-evil-hd-mod%2Fdownloads

  1. Go the the directory where Lutris installed Resident Evil (you should know if you changed the install location in step 5.c or if you forgot you can locate the location by clicking the up arrow next to the play button in lutris, click configure and in game options you can copy and paste the location that is displayed in the search bar next to executable) and drag in all the files inside the zip file downloaded in step 6 into the root of the Resident Evil install location.

  2. Download Seamless HD Full Mediakite (1.6GB)

https://www.moddb.com/downloads/start/254126

  1. Drag all the files from the Seamless HD zip file into the root install location of Resident Evil and overwrite all files when prompted.

  2. Inside the Resident Evil Install directory (where you just dragged in all the files) there will be a jpn folder inside that jpn folder theres a Players folder and inside that folder theres a file named w03.EMW rename the w03.EMW file to W03.EMW and place it in the Players folder thats inside the USA folder overwriting the old one. Delete the JPN folder, then create a link to the USA folder named JPN to mitigate crashing.

(To create a link folder, right click on any empty space in the Resident Evil install location, click on create new, select Link to file or directory, name the link jpn and link it to the USA folder. (If you don't do this, the game will crash when loading into certain areas.)

  1. Inside the Movie folder on the root of the Resident Evil install location, you're going to want to rename these files overwriting the old ones.

Rename ed4 to eu4

Renamr ed5 to eu5

Rename pj to pu

Rename oj to ou

Rename stfc_b to stfc_r

Rename staf_b to staf_r

Rename stfj_b to stfj_r

Rename stfz_b to stfz_r

(Thanks to AdEconomy586 for pointing this out)

11.b (optional) If youre like me and like the original capcom cubes startup video I suggest you go into the movie folder thats on root install location of Resident Evil and go to capcom clips, cubes and copy the Capcom.mp4 file and paste it into the movie folder to overwrite the old one.

  1. (This next step is thanks to Skau over in the SHDP Discord group)

Get dgVoodoo2 version 2.71.3 (NOT the latest version):

https://github.com/dege-diosg/dgVoodoo2/releases/tag/v2.71.3

from the dgVoodoo2 archive extract the following files:

dgvoodoo.conf MS/x86/DDraw.dll MS/x86/DD3DImm.dll

rename DDraw.dll to re_ddraw.dll, and move all of the files you extracted to the root of the game folder where ResidentEvil.exe is located

open dgvooodoo.conf in notepad, scroll down past the [DirectX] section, change VideoCard = internal3D to VideoCard = ati_radeon_8500 and VRAM = 256 to VRAM = 4GB. To remove the dgVoodoo watermark from your game, change dgVoodooWatermark = true to dgVoodooWatermark = false.

save the file.

  1. Now go back to Lutris and click on the up arrow next to the play button, click configure, and go to runner options. Here, you disable the dgvoodoo2 option, and below, where you see DLL overrides, you will change the section that says ddraw to ddraw,d3dimm,dinput8,libwebp and save.

13.b from here, make sure you have made a shortcut to Resident Evil on Steam because we will be going into game mode.

  1. Once in game mode, select resident evil and select the gear icon to go into settings, go to properties then scroll down to Game Resolution and change default to 1920x1080 and turn on the option below it called "set resolution for internal and external display"

  2. Now go back to the Resident Evil menu and select the controller icon and map the R4 button to up arrow key and R5 to down arrow key so you can change the settings in the next step. Now start the game.

  3. You will see a menu pop up, change resolution to 1280x960 (you can click on it till it turns blue and then use the R5 button to go down) and using the touch screen untick always boot in configure mode if you dont want to see this menu again.

(optional) You can make other changes in the configuration menu if you wish, but in my setup, i only changed vibration intensity to moderate and turned texture filtering off.

Click ok

  1. You will be greeted by another window here you need to select the [Dev]Seamless HD Project (click on Resident Evil to make it turn blue and use the R5 button to go down making sure you select the [Dev]Seamless HD option.

Click ok

  1. From here, you are done! You can play the game or follow the next step to bypass the menus all together.

  2. (Optional but recommended) over on the SHDP Discord group the user Doze_D created a .bat file that bypasses the [Dev] Seamless HD Project selection menu and goes straight to the game.

Download the file from here

https://discord.com/channels/549168005553192980/573895283646267412/1257068287049601125

Place it in the Root of the Resident Evil install location, then open up lutris and click the up arrow next to the play button, click configure, go to game options and in the arguments section type in

start ResidentEvil.exe -dev_SHDP

(In the original post, it says to type in start Biohazard.exe -dev_SHDP, but both arguments seem to work)

The End!

That's it, Resident Evil Seamless HD Project is now playable with the US GOG version of the game thanks to everyone above who has helped make this possible

So I recently set up a home media server and was planning on setting up remote access using Tailscale which doesn't work very well with VPN's from what I have read.

I don't want to download things exposing my IP address so was thinking about picking up a Raspberry PI and running Radarr & Sonarr, then setting the PI to auto transfer to my server every 24 hours with any new files.

I've never used a Raspberry Pi before so wasn't sure if the Zero would be powerful enough to do this. It'd literally just be used to connect to a VPN, Download and transfer files on my network.

Would the Pi Zero be suitable or is there a better Pi for this use case?

Netflix does let you add "guest" users in different households now, although It could be it just hasn't hit you yet. When they announced the password crackdown it stopped Netflix working in my second household, but we just logged out and in and we haven't been "blocked" since.

It seems for the initial debacle they blocked loads of accounts but I don't know how often they do a ban wave or if they just figured the original announcement would get more people to buy subscription's (which seems to have worked).

I've never seen a clothing store using RFID tags before but that's quite interesting technology. I've just done some reading up on it and I hope more places start using it it seems convenient and something I'd like to see adopted on a large scale.

I feel the people who don't like self checkout keep trying to push the idea that it's bad or putting people out of jobs, rather than just admitting it's convenient for most people. If i want to buy one or two items I don't want to queue up behind 5 people with a full trolley.

I second this, was about to recommend Kagi, auto filters listicles, fantastic for actually finding information written by real people on blogs and things that aren't SEO spam

Do you miss the days or fixed camera angles, janky combat and bad voice acting? Then this may be the perfect game for you!

Alisa is a love letter to classic survival horror games with a focus fixed camera angles, tank controls and obtuse puzzles. If you like the original Resident Evil or Silent Hill games this what you're looking for.

Alisa has a rather unique setting taking place in a large doll house full of creepy dolls, clowns and more monstrosities that I won't spoil here.

The gameplay has you exploring a large doll house (see: mansion) full of monsters and puzzles where you have to find the right key or item to progress. Ammo is somewhat scarce, however enemies drop currency upon defeat which you can use to buy upgrades and ammo. The upgrades include various dresses which give you different stat boosts such as taking less damage, or faster movement. You have to decide how much ammo you want to use to clear a room and whether it's worth the exchange as enemies don't respawn. After you finish exploring an area you will fight a boss, which upon defeat will give you access to the next area of the game. The combat can be quite difficult however the game has has some options to make the game easier with things like an auto-aim toggle,

The level design is quite good and the different areas of the game all feel unique with different enemy types, visual styles and music, and as you progress you'll find shortcuts linking the areas together for faster travel.

The develooper has continued to add support post launch and the patches have continued to add content including new areas and endings. There won't be any more content updates for the game, so now is the perfect time to jump in and experience everything. It takes about 8 hours to beat on your first playthrough, but there are 3 endings to unlock and New Game+ has additional features, so there's good replay value with bonus costumes and the like.

If you're a fan of old school survival horror pick this up you won't regret it.

Wasn't the reason they stopped going on sale was because the servers went down?

If someone doesn't know what Shazam is, it listens to music playing on the radio or TV and identifies it and helps you find the name/artist.

I was wondering if there open source equivalent, I tried searching google and AlternativeTo but only found Linux desktop apps.

I'm looking for getting an RSS feed up and running for tech news on my phone and was hoping for suggestions for some good feeds that aren't clickbait garbage, I currently have BBC News and Ars Technica, does anyone have any other website suggestions which are worth subscribing to?

I've signed up recently, currently working my way through Glen Cook's Black Company, I'm a big fantasy nerd so looking to add people with similar interests! I've imported all my goodreads history already, add me over at - AdjunctTavore@bookwyrm.social

[–] AnomanderRake@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just did this, you have to export from the Google Authenticator app, it'll give you two QR codes.

You have to scan both these codes into the Aegis app and it'll transfer over.

I've recently decided to switch out my Playstore apps for Open Source Apps as they're usually Ad Free and much less bloated. Can we use this thread to help people find open source android apps?

I'll start

K-9 mail, a great email alternative that let's you have multiple users logged in

Red Moon - A customisable night light app which lets you adjust the colour and settings including Colour, opacity and Darkness

Swift Notes - Note taking app

I've signed up for it, it's got a few books that I imported from Goodreads but I like it overall.

I think Storygraph is the best reading social media but happy to support something like this.

I just use Vanilla Firefox, I use chrome for work but all my personal stuff on Firefox, left chrome after there was talk of stopping ad blockers.

Silent Hill 2 was the first Silent Hill game on PS2 and it's a massive step up visually from the original game on PS1, and it still looks great today! The cutscenes look a bit dated but not awful, and generally the in engine cutscenes look quite good.

The story of Silent Hill 2 follows a man named James Sunderland who receives a letter from his dead wife telling him to come to their special place in Silent Hill. James quickly heads to the town to investigate the mysterious letter and find out if his wife Mary is still alive....

The story is definitely the strongest part of Silent Hill 2 and the mystery of Mary's letter keeps the game engaging for the appropriate run time of 6-8 hours. I think the story continues to get better as the game goes on. Having a small cast of 4-5 characters was a smart choice as you get to see them go on their their own adventure around silent hill independent of your actions. It makes them feel more real and "alive". Rather than just being there to give you quest objectives, or point you in the right direction they all act independent and don't take much interest in your actions.

I think the only way I can describe the voice acting in this game is weird, I know a lot of people love it, and some people hate it. I did enjoy the voice acting but I've seen a lot of people say the "bad" voice acting is an intentional design choice which I disagree with. I think it's just very hit and miss. James is pretty bland and monotone but Maria is great, her anyway outburst is one of the best parts of the whole game.

One interesting feature Silent Hill 2 has that I haven't seen in any other franchise is there's difficulty settings for "Action" and "Puzzles" independent of each other. I definitely think this makes the game more accessible to people who might get frustrated with puzzle games, or don't have the technical ability for action games as you can choose their ability independently.

On the topic of replay value this game has plenty, the game is relatively short if you know what you're doing. There's a total of six endings, 3 Main endings, a secret ending, and two joke endings. Unlike most games which take you to the end of the game and let you pick ending red blue or green the endings are Silent Hill 2 happen naturally and are unlocked depending on how you played the game. There's no "good" ending or "bad" ending, there's just three alternative endings which all make a good conclusion to the story, the joke endings aren't very conclusive but they are quite funny.

Some "Directors Cut's" versions of the game have a short extra gameplay mode or sub story where you play as one of the other characters and lasts around an hour but it's nothing special. It doesn't really add much to the plot but just helps slightly explain this character's origins.

Overall Silent Hill 2 holds up really well and is definitely worth playing if you can stomach the controls and overlook some shoddy voice acting. This game is a classic for a reason and is probably one of the best Survival Horror Games ever made.

Unfortunately as far as I'm aware Silent Hill 2 is not available on modern consoles. I think the most accessible version would be the PC release, as the game is very old so any toaster can run it.

There's a mod called Silent Hill 2 enhanced edition which adds a lot of Quality of life enhancements and I'd generally advise against the HD collection on Xbox 360 and PS3 unless you have no other option. These versions of the games are very buggy and visually were arguably worse than the originals. It has brand new voice acting but I couldn't comment on the quality as I haven't played it.

How do you feel about the second game being a standalone story and unrelated to the Story of 1 and 3 (3 being a direct sequel to the first game), do you think this is a strength or a weakness?
