i wonder how much is left from the very early sharing ideals from the dawn of the internet.

do you juat take or do you offer something?

upload stuff, contribute by seeding, rip, be part of a group ..?

Obvious answer is that people are sharing otherwise you'd have nothing to download :P

For me I usually permaseed, or at least seed back 5-10x if not planning to keep a download. Also have created new uploads at torrent sites and occasionally fill requests.

I seed as much as I can but I still have a 0.75 ratio sadly. I tend to dl random old shit nobody wants so i'm just helping the other weirdos like me. I plan on switchi g to linux and I'd like to set up my computer to be as secure as possible and then maybe upload stuff also.

And like in the old times I bring my hdd with me and share with friends when we meet in person !

I basically seed forever, and I also upload and fill requests sometimes. I have dozens of terabytes seeding. I see it as my contribution to the preservation of the art, and if I’m going to take up the storage space with it I might as well be seeding it too.

[–] throws_lemy@lemmy.nz 9 points 1 year ago

I always try to seed whenever I can, since I only have mobile connection

[–] FrostyCaveman@lemm.ee 8 points 1 year ago

I love seeing the seed ratio go up. For new releases it’s common to see 100:1 before I shut em off. My system is pretty disorganised and not automated which is why I manually clean up torrents. I’d love to run some long running seeds in future but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

But yea… SEED NUMBER GO UP

[–] hyper@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

For my automated content I go by a factor of 4. Things that I download manually usually also gets ratio 4 but things that are hard to come by or that I really like get unlimited ratio.

[–] sudoroot@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 year ago

This is me, except a ratio of 2. Hard to find things or if it's taking a long time to download, I let it seed indefinitely

[–] KpntAutismus@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

i usually seed until it reaches seed factor 5. i am planning to set up my NAS to seed indefinetely with a limited bandwidth.

I have deluge / sonarr / radarr set to seed to 2:1

[–] Wea@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't seed. I live in a country with tight laws and actual cases of people getting sued over torrenting and seeding. With different financial outcomes between those two.

We are on the poor side and while I have some technical knowledge I'm not confident enough I can protect myself from financial trouble. So I unfortunately torrent through a VPN and have my client set to seed 0%.

[–] rambos@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Better then pay for usenet instead of VPN. Not sure is 0% enough to protect yourself

[–] brickfrog@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 year ago

Not sure is 0% enough to protect yourself

It's definitely not. Copyright trolls send letters to all peers in a torrent swarm regardless of uploading/downloading. And in any case the bittorrent protocol uploads and downloads simultaneously - Even if the commenter is attempting to seed 0% they are still participating in the torrent swarm and uploading pieces of data to others in the swarm during their own download.

I have to assume that commenter's VPN is working as intended or maybe they have been lucky.

Minimum 10:1 ratio always

[–] rambos@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Private trackers I seed until Im running out of storage, public ones up to 1.2 ratio.

I used to upload some content, but dont have anything thats not already available anymore.

I did some donations to our fellow pirates tho

[–] paddirn@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Try to seed as much as I can, usually around 2:1, though my ratio is only 1.57 on one of the sites I frequent, so I’m apparently just a leech.

[–] Sabakodgo@lemmy.fmhy.net 3 points 1 year ago

Seeding whenever I can.

[–] Vuipes@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I always seed. I also upload stuff, if I don't find it.

[–] theshatterstone54@feddit.uk 2 points 1 year ago

Minimum 2:1 for something popular, try to do 3 or 4 to 1 for less popular ones, especially ones with a few seeds and a lot of peers. I don't uploaf or rip, because I don't know how, and have no reason to.

[–] editilly@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

I torrent using my phone 99% of the time, so I try to get to a 2:1 if possible, but large files like tv shows that have upwars of 200 gb take up too much space, and I can't have multiple seasons downloaded at the same time, so I usually get them up to 1:1 and then download the next episodes

[–] Hubi@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

Absolutely. I used to rip movies myself for my favorite private tracker. It shut down a while ago though, so now I'm just back to regular seeding.

[–] atlasraven31@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

I seed oldet stuff. Newer stuff I just get to 2:1 or so and that's it.

[–] formContainer@feddit.ch 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I set my thing up to seed but I think my upload speed is too slow. I occasionally seed slowly and its set to constantly do it but my ratio is not great... If anyone has tips to improve this please let me know!

[–] Yendor@reddthat.com 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are you port forwarding? You’ll have more possible peers if you have a port open, so better speeds on average.

[–] formContainer@feddit.ch 1 points 1 year ago

I just have default settings at the moment. If port forwarding will help then I will look into it

[–] Shere_Khan@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Does your tracker support bonus points?

[–] formContainer@feddit.ch 2 points 1 year ago

I have no idea what that even is if I'm being honest

[–] nooneescapesthelaw@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

I dont upload but i do seed, im not gonna lie my ratio is below 1

[–] captain_samuel_brady@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are ye a pirate or are ye Robin Hood?

[–] gwi1785@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago

i am a thief like we all are, no need for euphemism.

but i'd rather be robin hood than stoertebeker.

where do you think your files come from?

i just think if everybody once in a while would just buy and upload one file there would be a lot of new or unusual stuff.

On private trackers I seed until I delete the files(if I need space or the movie/tv-show is really bad)

On public trackers I don't take too much risks and only seed one day or ratio up to 1.

And it's setup on Radarr / Sonarr / Transmission, so I don't have to do much anymore

[–] Commiunism@lemmy.wtf 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't use torrents all that much to be quite honest - I just download and forget about it with my qbittorrent running in the background pretty much 16 hours a day while I'm awake.

Think the highest seed ratio I accumulated doing this was 500 ratio on a 50gb file.

[–] MaDeX@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Anyone recommend a seed box?

[–] paddirn@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Try to seed as much as I can, usually around 2:1, though my ratio is only 1.57 on one of the sites I frequent, so I’m apparently just a leech.

[–] sparkl_motion@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

A lot of what I grab doesn’t have a lot of traffic, but I’ll grab and seed at least 5-10x on stuff like new releases to make up for it on IPT.

I’m on a gigabit fiber connection, so my upload on my seed box is about 5-20mbps constantly.

[–] Inkidu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago

I don't have a lot of stuff that's not already uploaded. Niche books mostly. I offer x3 the upload on public torrents and indefinite on privates.
