!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

Nope, accounts exist on instances.

But you can export your settings and import them to a new account, so you keep all your subscriptions, blocks and other settings.

[–] eatham@aussie.zone 5 points 2 days ago

Just make a new account and put the link to it in the bio of the other account. I did that ages ago and it was worth it

[–] vvilld@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Can someone eli5 me the reason why you would need/want an account in a different instance? I still don't really fully understand the fediverse stuff, but am trying to.

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 2 days ago

There's a variety of reasons.

  1. instances are communities, some more loose than others
  2. some instances have themes. lemmy.world is general, aussie.zone welcomes anyone but it's mostly Australians or friends there-of. Having a user name/address like vvilld@aussie.zone says something about you.
  3. some instances have ideological alignments, lemmy.ml are tankies
  4. some instances de-federate from others, like hexbear is not federated by some / many instances.
  5. the "local" feed can be like a set of subscriptions or curated content. slrpnk.net is the best example I can think of for this, mostly environmentally conscious tech, and renewables, et cetera.
  6. some admins turn out to be idiots. In the early days there was some support from admins of specific / niche instances for bots re-posting content from reddit.
  7. there's no good reason not to have multiple accounts. In my own case I change instances regularly. IDK why exactly, I just actively avoid allowing my account to become some kind of extension of my identity.

Most common reason is you don't like how the server you're on is run, or it doesn't fit your hobbies well.

[–] vvilld@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I guess I'm not aware enough to even know how the server I'm on is run. From my understanding, you could see pretty much any community regardless of instance from whatever instance you happen to be on?

!piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com is blocked on your instance.

Not Jolly 😾🏴‍☠️

If you click "Instances" in the page footer and then switch to the tab "Blocked Instances", you'll find which instances your server has blocked, you can't see any posts or comments by users or in communities on instances on that list.

You may be satisfied with that practice or might not, the point is that the fediverse enables you to choose.

[–] Otherbarry@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Sometimes the instance you are on will block communities or other instances that you may still want to be able to view/browse.. in those cases your only solution is to create a new Lemmy account at a different instance that does not block those things.

For example you're on lemmy.world so all your blocked instances are listed at https://lemmy.world/instances

In addition lemmy.world admins also block entire communities e.g. blocking all piracy related communities is a big one there https://lemmy.world/post/13320356

[–] vvilld@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Thanks. It doesn't look like there are any blocked instances on lemmy.world. Is there a similar list of blocked communities?

[–] Otherbarry@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

To view blocked instances if you're browsing Lemmy on the desktop website go to https://lemmy.world/instances and click the "Blocked Instances" tab.

Unfortunately there no standard way to view blocked communities, I'm not sure if lemmy.world admins maintain a list somewhere.

I'll add that the blocked stuff is good/bad depending on your point of view. e.g. some instances (including lemmy.world) participate in Fediseer which helps determine spammy intances to potentially block and keep spam out. That sort of blocking is okay, the other types of blocking I'm not too onboard with but that's just IMO.

PS - If you're just starting out probably best not to overthink it too much :) As you get more comfortable browsing the Fediverse you can decide later on if you want to set yourself up on another instance.

You also might want one for NSFW to keep that separate

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

.world has had some moderation issues of late. Also, they defederated with instances they consider tankies. You think a tankie can't offer good advice when I have an AskLemmy question? Think a tankie can't offer insight troubleshooting a tech issue? I want all the voices.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

troubleshooting a tech issue

  1. Turn it off

  2. Shed the yolk of capitalism that weighs upon the working class, like they do in China.

  3. Turn it back on

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago

Nope. Export your subs and such, import it to your new account.

Copy/paste any comments you want to archive, and that's the best you can do

[–] jackalope@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago

Sadly there isn't which is a problem. ATPro has portable identity, activitypub does not.

What’s the benefit to pawn.social?

I picked lemm.me and it seems fine.

[–] nimble@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Some servers have a particular focus. Pawb.social is a furry server. Generally doesn't matter too much which server you use as long as it's not blocked from another server where there are communities you like. You can check the /instances page to see which servers/communities are blocked by a server.

Also if you want to mod then usually best to have your acct on that community's server. Less headaches with modreports.

It can be hard to find content if your home server doesn't interact with it enough.
