It actually was pretty easy. All I did was install Fennec and then tweak a few settings.

  • I switched the browsing protection to strict

  • I installed ublock origin

  • I went to about:config and enabled resist fingerprinting

I ran some fingerprinting tests and my slightly modified Fennec performs about the same as Mull

Fennec worries me a little because the project failed to deliver crucial security updates for several weeks, which ironically caused people to hop to Mull.

Browsers are really in a state right now.

Valid point.

This is exactly why I moved to mull. Now I'm moving back lmao

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago

I plan on just monitoring the security trackers

[–] SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Is there a reason to move off of mull? I'm not caught up

[–] Adda@lemmy.ml 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

There is. As per the latest announcement from DivestOS:

DivestOS and its apps will not receive any further updates.

Sadly, that means that there is basically no privacy-respecting Firefox-based Android web browser as of now which works out-of-the-box.

There is IronFox, a Mull fork, but it remains to be seen whether they are trustworthy and can keep up with the updates. In the meantime, a hardened Fennec is probably the best we can do.

Ah shit. This is sad

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It isn't going to get any more updates

Damn. Really disappointing

what's wrong with mull i didn't get the memo

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 days ago

It is no longer being maintained which means no security updates

[–] sloppy_diffuser@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Dev is no longer maintaining along with DivestOS.

It will no longer receive updates.

Can we please get an Arkenfox-like for mobile? I LOVE Librewolf and I just wish they would make a mobile version. Or if Mullvad Browser had a mobile version.

[–] moonlight@fedia.io 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I haven't moved from Mull yet, but there's IronFox which is a Mull fork

[–] Cornflake@pawb.social 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Any idea if they'll be getting a repo on F-Droid soon?

[–] moonlight@fedia.io 1 points 2 days ago

No idea, but I would guess that it's likely. I just got it with obtainium, so that's an option.

[–] azron@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Ironically looks like a potential alternative, thanks.

I spent the whole day figuring this out, i did the same as you with fennec and hardening. Took some inspiration from arkenfox and betterfox and thats about it.

Edit: its sad, but such is life i guess. I loved mull.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

Mull you will be missed

[–] Mwa@lemm.ee 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Did the same thing as a non mull user installed a fennec fork tho (Iceraven)

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No warranties or guarantees of security or updates or even stability!

Yeah that is not confidence inspiring. I don't need it to be perfect but a web browser needs to focus on security instead of just winging it.

[–] Mwa@lemm.ee 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Even that warning I never really faced issues with the browser(but still a concern).

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

If Iceraven was something I wanted or needed I might be ok with it. As it stands I don't see the use case for me personally.

I installed IceRaven as well

Where are you downloading Fennec?

I see F-droid has a certain version available, is this the one you use?

"Fennec F-Droid is based on the latest Mozilla Firefox release. It has proprietary bits and telemetry removed, but still connects to various Mozilla services that can track users."

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

F-droid

I don't think the telemetry us that big of deal but I also have no idea how to turn it off.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago

They're already off. The Fennec builds on F-Droid apparently don't even have the option to turn telemetry on -- it's not in the build.

Go to about:telemetry in the URL bar and it should say that telemetry upload is disabled.

I'd like to use a browser based on Gecko but they're far behind than Chromium based browsers in matter of security unfortunately

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

In terms of number of CVEs Firefox is better. The real danger of mobile Firefox is that it doesn't implement sandboxing which means that a security vulnerability can be very bad. However, Android sandboxes apps already so the chances of long term impact are low.

I would love to see Mozilla implement a proper security sandboxing in mobile Firefox. Instead we get AI and ads. I can't use Chromium since it no longer properly supports Mv2

Would be nice if we have Librewolf for Android

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago

That was Mull
