A place to share alternatives to popular online services that can be self-hosted without giving up privacy or locking you into a service you don't control.

Rules:

  1. Be civil: we're here to support and learn from one another. Insults won't be tolerated. Flame wars are frowned upon.

  2. No spam posting.

  3. Posts have to be centered around self-hosting. There are other communities for discussing hardware or home computing. If it's not obvious why your post topic revolves around selfhosting, please include details to make it clear.

  4. Don't duplicate the full text of your blog or github here. Just post the link for folks to click.

  5. Submission headline should match the article title (don’t cherry-pick information from the title to fit your agenda).

  6. No trolling.

edit: thank you for all the great comments! It's going to take a while to chew through the suggestions. I just started testing picoshare which is already looking both easy and useful.

Hi all! I am looking for a file-hosting / file-sharing service and hope you guys could recommend something?

Features I would like to see:

  • Docker-compose ready to use.
  • multi-user, not just for myself.
  • individual file size >2GB.
  • shared files should be public, not require a login to download.
  • optional: secret shares, not listed but public when the link is known.
  • optional: private shares that require either a password or a login.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences!

If your requirements don't need federation, then look into nextcloud.

Just curious what options we have if federation is needed.

Nextcloud has federation with other instances.

https://nextcloud.com/federation/

You've got Pixelfed which is similar to Instagram.

Sharry is a nice simple one that I think hits all your points.

Super impressed with Sharry, I love the QR codes for sharing with mobile users.

I think Seafile fits those criteria.

There are a few different repos with community-edition docker-compose installs.

If you want to install the Pro version (no license required for up to 3 users), you'll need to install using the official instructions.

Many people underestimate it, my goto for a fast an reliable file share service, which does just that, is production ready, has great client software and uses just few resources.

Seafile

The good old Mozilla Send was discontinued but the repo was forked and maintained. It should meet all your demands.
