I'll add more apps to this list as they are released.

Since all these apps are being constantly updated, I'll also include the version number. Please don't let my post stop you from using any of these apps. My complaints will probably be fixed very, very soon.

Summit v0.1.22 (Day 1): The app is pretty neat since they added inboxes halfway through my day. The app feels pretty neat overall. It will be much better once they add profiles. I just wish they had an infinite scrolling feature. The community selection feels kinda wonky though.

Connect v1.0.73 (Day 2): This is probably the best app for Android right now; but I obviously can't tell since I haven't even tried half of them yet. Nothing feels missing from this app. It's great and has all the features I could want from a Lemmy client. The only issue I had was that some communities sometimes don't appear in the hamburger menu. I check up on my Stephen King community every few hours but I often have to search for it to find it. Overall an amazing app.

fennec v0.0.4 (Day 3): Overall a pretty neat app. It doesn't have too many formatting options; no button for adding pics to comments. The reversed voting buttons were kinda annoying and sometimes when a post had too many comments or votes, or when I was deep into a comment thread, it wouldn't show the upvote button. Also idk if it's just me being dumb but I can't figure out how to edit posts...

Thunder v0.2.1 11 (Day 4): It's a decent app. I don't really have much else to say about it. My only complaint is that you can't add images to comments and posts. If you don't really care about that it's a good choice for your main app.

Lemming 1.0.0-alpha05 (Day 5): It feels different from the others apps I've tried so far (probably just because of the unusual hamburger menu) but it's great. Profiles and inboxes are missing but i liked the UI colors quite a lot which made scrolling through it fun for me. Also, swiping to upvote requires a very small swipe on this app so I used it quite a lot whereas I literally never used it on the other apps. Pretty great and it's probably gonna be one of the best when inboxes and profiles are added.

Missing wefwef. Every app has its flaws, but Connect is the more feature-rich.

It's easy to complain about the bugs in every one of them, but let's not forget that for the vast majority of us, we didn't even know that Lemmy ever existed a month ago.

Progress has been astounding

I didn't realize this at first, but using Firefox it just installs as a home screen shortcut, but if you install from Chrome it adds it to your app drawer like an actual native app.

Well put. The developers behind the apps have been on their toes to provide a more accessible experience to the community, albeit with different visions. :-)

I've used Jerboa for a while, but now I've switched to Liftoff. Loving it so far! Great interface, no lags, and better customization possibilities. Plus, compared to a lot of other apps, it's free software

Liking Connect so far myself.

[–] tooting_lemmy@lemm.ee 24 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I've tried a few apps, but I keep going back to Jerboa

I've been using connect and it's actually quite good and smooth.

[–] KSPAtlas@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sending this from connect, kinda wish the swipe controls were on two sides to allow swipe down votes and easier swiping

I keep trying all of them but keep coming back to Jerboa. It uses it's screen space most efficiently (even with all the customisations of the others) and for me seems to work the best.

Edit: Connect is probably the next best one I've tried on Android (and potentially better functioning than Jerboa), but the font is too bold however small I make it.

Connect feels very clean, it might be the best app out of my life.

[–] BrainisfineIthink@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago

I feel like it was way more glitchy last week but theyust have rolled an update because now it's absolutely solid. Thunder is nice too but it gets lost scrolling frequently. It has my favorite, probably most underrated feature though, which is the ability to tap to unblur NSFW and then re-tap to blur them again. I wish more apps would copy that feature it is SO SMOOTH, and makes me feel way better using card views and browsing with the all filter. Don't have to disable NSFW completely, but I can tap then double tap to see it and hide it again without ever leaving the feed.

I like Connect so far. Thanks for doing this

[–] TheOneAndOnly@lemm.ee 8 points 1 year ago

Me, too. Been here since RiF died. New to the fediverse, and Connect was the first app I tried. It wasn't exactly straight forward, but I figured it out, and am quite impressed with it! Out of the box, feels a lot like RiF, and with the ginormous uptick in posting, the content I'm seeing improves every day.

Can't find thunder on the Playstore, so far it's either connect or liftoff. Connect works better but liftoff looks better. But I really hope boost for Lemmy will be released soon

Connect was the smoothest switch from sync for me, they also just added haptic feedback

[–] Leviathan@lemmynsfw.com 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I switched from Jerboa to Connect because it crashed a little too often and was a little clunky on the scrolling. Connect doesn't have any of those issues and feels like Infinity so it'll probably be my daily.

I've settled on liftoff until boost is released. Seems to be the best combination of functioning features and nice UI IMO.

Thunder for the win. > This comment was sponsored by the developer

[–] Dinodicchellathicc@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Jerboa sucks ass. Liftoff is great imo.

I've been on lemmy a total of 2 hours between both apps

[–] Tyfud@lemmy.one 9 points 1 year ago

Wefwef.app FTW

[–] Kraftee@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

I've used every single app that can work on Android (including the web apps) found here - https://lemmyapps.netlify.app/

Connect seems to be the most feature filled and smoothest experience in my opinion.

Currently doing the same. I liked Connect but navigation is a bit confusing so for now sticking with Jerboa. Gonna give other apps a try while I wait for Boost for Lemmy.

Starting day 1 with Summit and things are already not looking good. I don't think I can check my profile or notifications.

If I don't reply to comments today blame this thing :D. I'm not switching to a different app until tomorrow even to check my inbox.

Update 1: They updated the inbox thing during my day with Summit and it actually feels very good now. They just need to add profiles and it will actually be a viable option for my full-time app. I do miss Liftoff's feature where I can see all the new comments on my community tho.

[–] s6original@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (3 children)

You'll have a better day tomorrow.

Which app deals best with hiding already read content? I only found the option in Connect to hide the posts I already scrolled over. Joey for areddit had a post contextual menu item to hide everything above, that was the most convenient to me. Or is there any other technique to not to stare at the same content at each session ?

I've replaced Lemmotif with Wefwef as Lemmotif doesn't support login yet. If I get two apps with missing inboxes in a row I'll open up Liftoff for a few minutes to reply to messages. Bye for now as it's hard to find this post every time I want to reply to comments.

I keep hoping for Infinity for Reddit to port to "for Lemmy"/"for kbin", but the original dev has no interest (they're converting to a paid model) and so far no one's seriously thought about forking it.

So I've just been sticking with the mobile webpage. And honestly, it's not that bad. I'm using a few userscripts (mobile Firefox for the win) to clean it up just a tad, and it's honestly pretty good.

[–] mojo@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

Huh, Fennec is the name of my web browser. Which I definitely recommend, it's a fork of Firefox stable with all proprietary and telemetry removed.

Are you planning to update this post, or make a new review post each day? I'm very interested in your results!

[–] mizu6079@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just started Day 3 with fennec. I went in not expecting much but it's great. But when I'm scrolling it sometimes jitters and jumps upwards.

First I started with jerboa, but it was a rough start that pushed me to try to develop my own app, quite a fun experience. Besides that, Liftoff and wefwef are the clear leaders here for me, design and feature wise.

[–] ronalicious@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

the thing i'm finding with the apps is that as the backend is upgraded/patched/changes the apps all respond differently to those changes. on top of that, updates to the apps themselves can cause erratic behavior. i'm looping thru 4 right now just trying to find something consistent.
