Jack Dorsey is not why people wanted to leave Twitter though.

Big brands might like Threads but I doubt it will go as well for smaller creators.

What makes you say that about Threads?

[–] TwilightVulpine@kbin.social 38 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Because at best Instagram is very fussy about keeping a brand-safe platform and an algorithm-driven feed that is not the sort of thing who favors smaller creators. Threads is an off-shoot of Instagram, likely it will be treated the same way.

When Twitter was at its best, people liked it for how it allowed them to keep up with current events, and to spread interesting content through viral sharing, as users with similar interests spread it among each other. I don't think Facebook will allow it to be user-driven enough for it to have this sort of organic virality.

Isn't Instagram often used by small creators (like insta models) and small shops and cafes often post there.

I was mostly thinking of artists and game developers. But overall I don't think the platform really helps them promote themselves beyond what they do on their own.

What you should worry about is Zuck interest in the fediverse. It might boost the fediverse but he might somehow take over and become chancellor Sutler.

[–] Zink@pawb.social 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He wants to outdo the rest of the fediverse in features and users and then centralize bluesky and/or defederate from mastodon and others so that they can essentially attempt to kill off the fediverse.

Bluesky isn't twitter federated. Bluesky is the death of federation.

Question, why does everyone keep saying it will kill the fediverse? How? If you mean lure people away from smaller instances, so what? Why do we need growth? There is no monetary reason to grow, so why worry about user counts?

Assume that meta starts managing the largest instances, and makes a bunch of changes that give actually useful features that other instances don't adopt (assume they require some meta oversight or other bs). What happens when meta starts using their clout to start suggesting more changes moving forwards, further alienating those instances and maybe getting less people to use them. Then you have issues maintaining some niche communities that are not under meta's instance, so info is naturally funneled back into a meta instance. And then meta does something to essentially lock down the use of their instance so you have to give them your personal data in order to view the data generated by the community in the meta instance.

I've actually seen this happen personally with people growing cordyceps mushrooms. There is a big active group on Facebook that discusses their tips and tricks, but you have to log in to be able to see their info now.

Despite a lot of people here being more or less fine with the current growth, there absolutely needs to be growth so that some of the niche communities will migrate here so that info can't be locked down.

Extend, Embrace, Extinguish is what is going on. Its a corporate tactic to kill competitors. Essentially they want to bring their walled garden here and get everyone in it so they can continue harvesting data. Now I don't know about you, but I came here to get away from corpos. I don't want a fucking corpo coming here and monetizing the place up.

Yeah I'm not that worried, fediverse is already full of cool people. More than likely people are going to try out threads but get tired of the shit facebook pulls and learn that there's a way to keep access to all the good shit without needing zuck to be involved

[–] Zink@pawb.social 1 points 1 year ago

Last I heard, people already don't think threads is fediverse. However, I've seen plenty of people claiming that bluesky should be federated and honestly that's what makes me scared.
