This is called parsing - your brain processing the speech sounds into meaning. That feeling of suddenly realizing what was said is your brain needing a little extra time to parse.

This can happen for lots of reasons. One time my sister in law was so grumpy that my brain struggled to parse what she was saying because the tone and words were so mismatched.

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago

Heh. Like a 90s dell computer analysing a string for certain characters.

[–] zea_64@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago

Still beats C++ parsing speed.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.world -5 points 1 month ago

Was your sister in law stuck in a dryer?

[–] RandomStickman@kbin.run 40 points 1 month ago

If I have a dollar every time this happens I think I'd be good for groceries

Autistic people:

[–] stingpie@lemmy.world 25 points 1 month ago

This happens to everyone. It happens because your brain registers the other person saying something before it actually understands what is being said. And when most people don't know what someone said, they ask, "what?" without even thinking. Source: my intro to psych textbook.

[–] Trex202@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is why I pause after someone says "What?"

Then they look at me puzzled when I don't repeat it.

[–] nexussapphire@lemm.ee 16 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It's fun to say something completely different when they ask what.

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I've caught people doing this before but I never say anything because I don't wanna have to explain to them why I can suddenly recall something I didn't hear

[–] emeralddawn45@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 month ago

I usually do this anyway to a certain extent, at least I kinda rephrase what I said, in case them asking 'what' wasn't because they didn't hear me but because they didn't understand. Then if their brain does catch up they get two different versions of my message :)

Quick solution: when you don’t understand what someone just said, wait a few seconds before asking what. Often, your brain will fill in the gap given a second to catch up.

[–] nexussapphire@lemm.ee 14 points 1 month ago

Good idea, they always repeat themselves when they see you sitting there with a confused and worried expression.😆

[–] hubobes@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 month ago

That's why, if someone responds with what?, I usually wait for a few seconds. It usually resolves the question on its own.

[–] amda@feddit.nl 1 points 1 month ago

Or "Yhea, I got some of it at the shop, want some?"

[–] CheapFrottage@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 1 month ago

Yeah, you gotta let it load sometimes

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

Might be some form of APD, a lot of my family members have it (myself included XD)

[–] gerryflap@feddit.nl 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This happens quite often to me, especially when tired. I'm assuming that for me it's mostly autism related. That being said, I've noticed that many non-autistic people also have this happen every now and then., it just happens more for me.

[–] ByteOnBikes@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago

This is a excellent opportunity to practice patience with yourself.

If it happens again, try to respond by going into a deep thought instead of saying "What". The other person will think you're a wise thinker too.

[–] FrostyCaveman@lemm.ee 4 points 1 month ago
