The reasons are the worst:

  • Companies said they are posting fake jobs for a laundry list of reasons, including to deceive their own employees.

  • More than 60% of those surveyed said they posted fake jobs “to make employees believe their workload would be alleviated by new workers.”

  • Sixty-two percent of companies said another reason for the shady practice is to “have employees feel replaceable.”

  • Two-thirds of companies cited a desire to “appear the company is open to external talent” and 59% said it was an effort to “collect resumes and keep them on file for a later date.”

  • What’s even more concerning about the results: 85% of companies engaging in the practice said they interviewed candidates for the fake jobs."

This is insane. Paying people to recruit for fake jobs instead of paying their current employees more...

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 20 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Paying people more is a recurring cost, and the ultimate goal of a company is to keep increasing profits. If they can spend $10k once to scare their employees into being more productive, it has a better return on investment.

Disgusting and true. I wonder what percent of companies threw pizza parties.. 🙄

It's been proven time and time again that treating your employees correctly and paying them what they're worth is far more productive. It's just sociopathy.

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

Yeah, but that's thinking long-term. CEOs of publicly traded companies don't give a shit about anything other than making the line go up during their own employment at the company.

Cutting 10% of the workforce is profit right in the pocket of the shareholders, as long as the company can somewhat continue to go on.

They don't give a fuck about productivity, but they will dangle that over your head for whatever reason they deem advantageous.

You want a raise? Bummer, productivity is lower than expected, so we have no budget for that.

Cruelty is the point.

Holy hell. Those are the things they're willing to admit? Then what the fuck do they still have in hiding?

In some jurisdictions, you can't hire foreign workers unless there are no local workers that meet the job requirements. Posting a fake position with the intent to deny all candidates is usually sufficient to demonstrate that an attempt was made to search for local talent. They can't admit it without getting into a lot of trouble, however.

[–] Mkengine@feddit.de 1 points 4 months ago

But is it a fake position if you intend to fill it with a foreign worker?

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 1 points 4 months ago

Hey now. These companies are made of people.

[–] Chainweasel@lemmy.world 38 points 4 months ago (1 children)

"Nobody wants to work anymore" say the companies that deceive people into thinking they might get a job with postings for positions that don't exist.

Yeah, if I applied to a job and then they tried to contact me a year later I'd turn them down just based on the principle.

If you reverse it and imagine a prospective hire putting off an interview for months or a year and then calling in expecting to still take the interview it shows how ridiculous it is.

They can do it because hold all the cards. Honestly, if our government actually wanted to protect us, they would make this illegal.

How is it not bait and switch or false advertising? They can charge companies for those actions when they do it to customers, why not to applicants?

[–] Potatos_are_not_friends@lemmy.world 18 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Felt like when I was job hunting around 2019, 80% of job applications I filled out didn't even feel real. No reply back. Weird hoops to jump. Submit a resume then fill it out again.

I’ve been filling out a lot of job apps like this recently. Not even a confirmation email threat they got my app. Those are probably the fake ones.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 9 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I suspect this of a famous video game communications app that rhymes with Piss-Poured.

They've been advertising a job that I would love and be very good at for months now, I've applied three times every time they take down the ad and put it back up.

I even built them an interactive portfolio of my work that looks exactly like one of their servers, with brand colors and everything 🥲

[–] Etterra@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

I've been getting a shitton of recruiter spam out of nowhere in recent months. I wonder if it's related.
