I'm adding a business that is primarily for surfing and also has some skateboard accessories. Can I use multiple tags to designate this?

"shop=surf;skate"

Would that work? On the OSM wiki it says under cuisine you can use multiple tags but I don't see anything saying if it's proper to do that with a key for shop.

I tend to avoid stacking primary tags, like shop. I would use shop=sports combined with sports=surf;skate.

The Wiki documents shop=sports + sports=…;…

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key%3Asport#Used_on_shop=sports

This makes sense, as in: “here is a sports shop which has articles for 2 types of sports.”

Why do you avoid stacking primary tags?

Ah, that's it! That looks to be the de-facto standard. Thank you very much

@sic_semper_tyrannis @openstreetmap
There is also shop=sports, which would probably allow multiple sports tags.
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:shop%3Dsports

For the sports tag it looks like it would be sport=surfing;skateboard.
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:sport

In theory that would be searchable for people looking for either (in practice I don't know if any apps support this).

Exactly, but please use the sport values like skateboard (not skate, not skateboarding) as they are already established for sport=*. (See https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/sport#values)

Maybe its even worth to use

sports:surfing=yes

sports:skateboard=yes

So then its more likely that we establish commonly used Tags in the sport shops and amenities.

@redd Oops, transcription error when flipping tabs there. I'll edit to fix.

Tough call. On one hand, choosing the primary sport probably makes it more likely that renderers will render some sort of icon for that sport. On the other hand, there’s the whole don’t map for renderers, prioritize capturing accurate data.

When I’m torn, I try to find another example of what I’m mapping and see how somebody else mapped it. Look for a precedent if you will. If you’re comfortable with overpass and taginfo, those two sites can be invaluable in finding other examples to follow.

Yeah true I've seen the drama with mapping for renderers. I just gave overpass a try but I must be doing something wrong. Tag Info is easier to understand and reported back one example of a shop=surf;skate;snowboard. Thanks for the tips. Someone just posted another comment to an OSM Wiki page with what seems to be a definitive answer to my question.
