Fediverse is a portmanteau of "federation" and "universe".

Huh? The term Metaverse long predates Fediverse. If anything it is the opposite way around, although Fediverse is more of a combination of Federation and Universe... so I guess a case of convergent linguistic evolution ;)

Yes, I bought the book when I heard about the relationship. The sci-fi Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. Didn't got to read it yet, though.

wikipedia credits the term to a book from 1992, which predates the fediverse as far as I know

The term metaverse is earlier, although it is at least suspicious that the metaverse was launched just at the moment when Trump's "truth" project granted great notoriety to mastodon and all other federated platforms.

Zuck is an ass, but he is also a nerd. I am sure he knew the term before.

Recently was talking with someone and they said "fediverse and metaverse" in one breath and I was like whoa. I don't think anyone wants to give Facebook even Meta let alone metaverse.

The two concepts share very little except the rhyme. I see the term as really up the air so I'd only use it if I wanted to confuse people.

My new way of advocating fedi, my 'campaign slogan' if you will is: "Fediverse: Peopleverse!"
