Side Note:

  • for anyone that has manual registration verification enabled I'd suggest on verifying with known users on past/pre-existing accounts before accepting duplicates,
    • esp for admin/moderator usernames

Are there any tools that that could help confirm identity? It seems like the input would be the username, but beyond that, I don't know how identity could be proven / how a distinction could be made between an imposter and the "real" user. Usernames aren't unique in the fediverse.

The approach I've seen here on Lemmy is to bidirectionally reference alts in each profile

Mastodon has rel=“me” attribute you can add to your personal site and link to from your profile

Currently there aren't any that I'm aware of except for the modlog:

  • which can confirm/validate existing admins & moderators on federated instances
