As disappointing as it is to see it end, 5 seasons is a decent run, and I'd rather it end before they "jump the shark" or just fizzle out.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 13 points 6 months ago

Lower Decks is the kind of show that needs to cut to black for the last time right as cool Boimler on water skis is approaching a shark.

Agreed, even as a huge fan of LD I could personally sense it being more difficult to write more stories for our lowly stalwarts of Starfleet in season 4. Better to be able to end still chanting "Lower Decks! Lower Decks! Lower Decks!"

I don't know. We only got like 10 x 25 minutes episodes per season. That's not a lot of content.

[–] ElderWendigo@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I enthusiastically disagree. Lower Decks needs to boldly go and jump the shark more than traveling back in time to save a whale or talking to an old microwave that became a god.

I really enjoyed the live action cameos the two cast members did on SNW. Hopefully there will be more Trek work for them.

@reddig33 @startrek Well we know Tawny Newsome is on the writing staff of the "Starfleet Academy" series, so she's still lurking at least behind the scenes. 🙂

@billmason @startrek @reddig33 buy and hold onto your blu rays.

[–] imnapr@discuss.tchncs.de 26 points 6 months ago (1 children)

The world couldn't handle a full 7 seasons of LD

[–] billmason@mastodon.social 8 points 6 months ago

@imnapr @startrek Too much greatness for their bandwidth. 😆

[–] HWK_290@lemmy.world 19 points 6 months ago

Pretty gutted at this news, but as others have pointed out, this move may cement LD as a classic without outstaying their welcome. And hopefully there is a desire for more animated Trek now

“While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true.”

Indeed, if even an animated series is ending after five seasons, I expect this to be a pretty firm maximum moving forward.

“We remain hopeful that even beyond Season 5, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures,”

That's encouraging.

I'd read a comic series. Hell I'd even pay for it.

Nice, def picking that up. You know what would also be amazing? A series of audio episodes, like BBC style radio comedies. The voice cast is sooo good. I'm just imagining how amazing a collab with John Finnemore would be.

[–] Stormygeddon@startrek.website 1 points 6 months ago

I remember liking the caption that any story is improved by the addition of Dracula.

[–] chahk@beehaw.org 1 points 6 months ago

They probably mean comic books.

[–] halm@leminal.space 18 points 6 months ago

[Boimler scream]

[–] cygnus@lemmy.ca 12 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Dammit. This will leave SNW as the only Trek series? I like SNW a lot but two series would be nice given how short seasons are nowadays.

[–] ValueSubtracted@startrek.website 15 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Prodigy soldiers on for now, and Starfleet Academy is in pre-production, set to start filming this summer.

[–] Crankpork@beehaw.org 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Paramount doesn't even want Prodigy on their own streaming service, I have no idea what they're doing with the franchise...

[–] ValueSubtracted@startrek.website 1 points 6 months ago

Apparently, the numbers on P+ weren't good - the Hagemans themselves have said so.

To be honest, if Paramount slowly decides that they're better off selling their shows to other streamers... I'm not totally against it, depending on how it's done.

Well looks like I'll be filling unemployment 🖖 🤣

[–] ThrowawayInTheYear23@lemmy.world 10 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Replaced with Star Trek Upper Decks?

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 3 points 6 months ago

Yeah, they're technically not even lower decks anymore since season 4.

[–] End0fLine@programming.dev 2 points 6 months ago

Could you imagine if that is the long con here? I’d love that.

[–] Klanky@sopuli.xyz 8 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Oh no.

Edit: In case I’m coming across sarcastic, I’m not. I loved LD probably the most of the new batch of Star Trek shows. It was just a joy to watch.

[–] UESPA_Sputnik@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

Meanwhile, the adventures continue for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which has been renewed for season 4.

At least there's that.

It's still surprising that Lower Decks ends so soon. It's well received and should be reasonably cheap to produce. Why would they axe it?

That's sad. While I didn't enjoy every aspect of it, I quite enjoyed it overall. I'm happy to hear season 3 isn't supposed to be the last for SNW though.

[–] palarith@aussie.zone 3 points 6 months ago

Lower decks live action series? Pretty please?

[–] TheImpressiveX@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 months ago

It's Marin-over.

[–] azerial@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 months ago

Awww i love lower decks!
