I have been thinking about forking one of them, to finally make one that isn't shit.

My biggest issue with them all, is horrendously inefficient screen space usage. Not a single one of them achieves the same message density on-screen as most commercial messaging apps. They use pointlessly massive margins and line gaps, and often the font is SMALLER while fitting fewer messages on screen!

Images are either massive, or pointlessly refuse to take up horizontal real-estate. On some, reactions are unusably tiny for seemingly no reason.

I have been using schildi, it has enough customization over element, that it's been good enough for me. But I still do want something closer to the message density of Telegram, while allowing a larger font for readability.

All the color options are also way too bright. I'd love to use an accent but they contrast horribly with the white text that is then overlayed atop them. This is a problem in multiple clients...

I use fluffychat. Intuitive, fast and simple

Element. Its buggy as hell but I dislike change

Interesting. I've found it pretty good and only ever had one bug with it (take a photo for a message and then instead of going to the confirmation screen it drops back to the message and you have to take it again).

Element and fluffy. They're kinda the default, and I don't use matrix enough to merit hunting around

I like element because it has the most features. When I used fluffy chat I always noticed things that were missing like the ability to find gifs

Element and fluffy chat are probably the best options currently for android. I personally use Element as it reminds me of discord.
