Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) says he will hold up a $1 trillion “minibus” spending package that needs to pass by the end of the day Friday to avoid triggering a partial government shutdown.

“I will hold it up primarily because we’re bankrupt and it’s a terrible idea to keep spending money at this rate,” Paul told The Hill on Wednesday.

“The spending bills before us will lead to a $1.5 trillion deficit for the year. We’re borrowing about $1 trillion every three months. It’s an alarming pace of accumulation of debt,” he said.

“My opposition to this will be based on how much” the package would add to the U.S. debt, which now stands at $34.5 trillion, he added.

Asked if he would delay final Senate passage of the bill past the weekend, which would trigger a partial government shutdown, Paul shrugged and lifted his palms to the air, signaling he hadn’t decided yet how long to delay it.

He couldn't run fast enough to give the billionaire class 1.5 trillion of our tax dollars in 2017 under the Trump administration. That alone exploded our debt even more than Reagan did. That's quite the accomplishment.

Oh, and our taxes go up this year and keep increasing. The billionaire classes' never will.

Hmm, why could be a cause of this?

And who approved this legislation?

Senator Paul, you have much to be blamed for in causing this.

Anyone have that first graph in a dollar amount? Seems odd to display that as a percentage.

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

Wow that first graph really tells a story. That's a great post. Thanks for taking the time.

Ok then. Slash the military budget and give half that money to the IRS with directives to go after the rich tax dodgers. Oh no, that isn't what you meant Rand?

[–] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 40 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Alright someone text his neighbor, he knows how to deal with Rand Paul.

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I feel like there's a good story here that I'm unaware of. If you would be so kind as to fill me in I'd be much obliged.

Paul suffered five rib fractures, including three displaced fractures, and later required medical attention for pneumonia.

Why is it always Rand Paul? The poor man does not understand how spending and taxation work.

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 43 points 7 months ago (1 children)

He does understand, but he is a malicious jerk who wants all the tax money to benefit the wealthy so he lies about things to get his way.

For example, cutting taxes on the wealthy and then using the lack of funding to deny benefits to the less fortunate.

He's just doing Putin/Trump's bidding as usual.

[–] Neato@ttrpg.network 1 points 7 months ago

Because he's expendable.

Just in case anyone wondered whether the guy named after a fraud beloved by total morons (Ayn Rand) BY a fraud beloved by total morons (Ron Paul) is still being a fraud appealing to total morons by pretending that he doesn't know the difference between a national budget and a household budget after 13 years as a senator.

the guy named after a fraud beloved by total morons (Ayn Rand)

"Rand" is a short form of "Randal", his full name. His father didn't name him after Ayn Rand.

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world -2 points 7 months ago

Nah, I read somewhere that his dad loved ayn rand and male prostitutes.

[–] 3volver@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

Yea, for all the people who think the senate is necessary, here you go. 2 senators per state is why we have to deal with this bullshit.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Funding for the departments of Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services, State and other federal agencies will expire at 11:59 p.m. on Friday.

The Kentucky lawmaker said he would seek to amend the package, which was crafted by a small group of congressional leaders and senior appropriators after negotiations with the White House.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), another prominent conservative, is urging colleagues to vote against the bill and its numerous expected earmarks, which are technically banned under the Senate GOP conference rules.

Ignoring this truth has contributed to our $34 trillion national debt,” Lee posted on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter.

You can’t spend the money and then decide you don’t want to pay the bill. Not how it works.
