Joe takes action while Republicans aid Putin by denying aid to Ukraine.....

Show me the list if 500 and include a letter explaining why they weren’t sanction before now.

That would be something approaching journalism

[–] rezifon@lemmy.world 18 points 6 months ago (2 children)

I have to wonder if this doesn’t also close the door on many of Trump’s options for raising the money he now owes for his judgments.

[–] theodewere@kbin.social 3 points 6 months ago (2 children)

the Russians have no more use for him, why would they dump money down that hole now

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 24 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Trump can win. Don't assume he won't.

[–] Orbituary@lemmy.world 15 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Many people are doubting he can. It frightens me how many people think he's not a threat.

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 7 points 6 months ago

Yeah he has 2 entry points too.

Haley won't drop out of the race and keeps confirming they will Pardon Trump of anything she can.

Just as I can see a Trump victory, I think she sees a reality in which Trump is nailed and uses it to show she was running the whole time. Scoops up his voters and more moderates who because of fucked up propaganda think the insurrectionist leader being jailed is an issue and wins to pardon and add him to the cabinet and make him defacto leader.

We really need a good showing from Democrats both in leadership and voters or else there are lots of ways we fall here.

What? putin is investing heavily in trump, even as we type. putin sees trump as an instrument to reverse the outcome of the Cold War, ffs.

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Definitely true but also funny that Putin has said he prefers dealing with Biden, but that's just probably because Biden is old school and doesn't talk about how cool it was that Putin one time gave him a soccer ball and doesn't ask if they are friends all the time.

[–] splicerslicer@lemmy.world 9 points 6 months ago (1 children)

If Putin says he prefers dealing with Biden you can be certain he does not prefer Biden.

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 0 points 6 months ago

While I agree I also think even if I was an evil oligarch that would benefit from Trump I would also already be exhausted at the idea of working with him and rather just be behind the scenes mostly rich rather than be world ruler if he needed to be at my side.

Trump just said that he would stick Russia on people as his enforcer to make money and like... There is no way Putin likes Trump threatening his BF to go to war for him.

[–] neidu2@feddit.nl 2 points 6 months ago

I think those doors were already closed for him and many other GOPniks. The ruble doesn't go as far as it used to.

Why haven't these sanctions already been in effect? Seems like every now and then there are some more sanctions being added but why not just do them all already?

[–] Rapidcreek@lemmy.world 9 points 6 months ago

As I understand it, these sanctions are specifically focused on those people and mechanisms used for Navalny's imprisonment.

[–] Heresy_generator@kbin.social 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Because once you apply all of the sanctions you possibly can you have nowhere else to go and Russians no longer has to weigh the possibility of sanctions against whatever actions they may be considering. So it becomes a situation where either the next line Russia crosses is worth a kinetic response or it isn't and Putin is a habitual line-stepper.

[–] Pistcow@lemm.ee 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I mean, can't we give them the Cuba embargo treatment?

[–] Orbituary@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

You mean an unfair block on a country that hasn't been a threat to us since the Cold War ended in 1991?

[–] NataliePortland@lemmy.ca 8 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Russia has directly threatened US with nuclear war several times since Ukraine war began. They have also attacked our banks, cities, institutions, governments with ransom ware and have used misinformation campaigns to influence democratic US elections. Omg I almost forgot that the Charlottesville neo nazi March where a woman was murdered was planned and organized by Russia.

Oh and remember when Russia hacked the DNC to steal emails about Clinton and Sanders ( also fuck the DNC for that nonsense) which they sold to the Trump campaign. And how a Russian spy was arrested in the US when she was caught funneling Russian money through the NRA to Trump.

These are just the first things to come to mind I’m sure there is so much more I’m forgetting

[–] Orbituary@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Russia is not cuba. Cuban here, btw.

[–] RazorsLedge@lemmy.world -1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Your phrasing sort of made it sound like you were saying Russia isn't a threat. But yeah it sucks that Cuba is still embargoed. I hope that changes soon.

[–] Orbituary@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

No it didn't. Your interpretation of my phrasing did. He was speaking about Cuba and the embargo and I was responding to that statement, not the top comment.

This is how threaded discussions work.

[–] RazorsLedge@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago

It sure did, the replies to your comment prove it. You were replying to someone who suggested we apply Cuba treatment to Russia. Russia was the subject here.

Miscommunication happens and I see you don't really want to hear about it.

[–] dodgy_bagel@lemmy.blahaj.zone -2 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Wait, so the country we are actively financing a war with is not already cut off from any and all economic activity with us?

So we're helping them win the war that we are financing against them.

[–] DaGeek247@fedia.io 4 points 6 months ago

They've been doing this since the russians first invaded; painful sanctions with threats of even more painful sanctions if things continue. You don't cut off everything instantly, it leaves you with nothing to negotiate with if they push even further. It also causes trust issues with other countries if you cut off someone completely for one (admittedly major) fuckup. That's how you lose allies.

Also worth noting is this quote from the treasury department (thanks botzo);

"To deny Russia the resources necessary to support its brutal war against Ukraine, Treasury is designating targets including a major cog in Russia’s financial infrastructure; more than two dozen third-country sanctions evaders in Europe, East Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East; and hundreds of entities in Russia’s military-industrial base and other key sectors."

Theyre adding sanctions for proxy countries that are being used to get around already established sanctions. Cleanup, essentially.

Have I got news for you…
