Misleading title? "Reddit claimed..", no, others claimed, reddit has not commented
It's not misleading it's just written in a passive voice.
If you read the whole sentence it's fairly clear that BlackCat is the subject that is doing the claiming. There's room for making it more clear but it's not misleading as written.
Yeah, I wouldn't call it misleading, but it's poorly written for sure. Active voice would be clearer and more succinct, e.g. "BlackCat claims to have hacked Reddit, threatens to leak data"
My guess is op (or whoever wrote the title) wanted "reddit" to come first to grab people's attention. Definitely poorly written though.
Can be read as either "Reddit has claimed" or "Reddit was claimed", but "and it has threatened" clarifies it is not the former.
How fun that they were going to wait for the IPO before leaking the data but decided now was a better opportunity, and that theyβve added rolling back the API pricing change to their ransom demands.
I couldn't support any ransom, but damn, they been throwing bs reasons; I'd find it poetic if bs bite them back
Leak what data? 80GB of cat reposts? TikTok videos? Unless itβs pictures of spez fucking farm animals (real ones, not the memes and AI versions people post) itβs not going to matter. Actually, scratch that - it still wonβt matter.
I doubt they actually have been. I suspect this is the excuse they're going to use to enforce normalcy t oreturn. 'Oh all those subs? that was a psyop from blackcat. We de-platformed their mods to ensure that any influince is gone.'

I think this does more good for reddit than bad, makes the community look unhinged
Sure but unhinged users don't look good to investors. Imagine if a place like 4chan tried to IPO?
I donβt like what reddit is doing with the API stuff but definitely donβt support hackers blackmailing reddit.
Reddit's week appears to have gone from bad to worse, as AlphV (aka BlackCat) has claimed that operators broke into Reddit's servers on February 5, 2023, and took 80 GB of zipped data. Furthermore, Reddit has been contacted by BlackCat, once on April 13 and again on June 16, with no response and no attempt to find out what was taken.
The hack happened before the api thing.
It's kind of hilarious that they're just ignoring them, tbh.
