I wonder if reddit's ffxiv community decide to move to this community here or somewhere else and what the plans are, because it looks like an indefinite blackout. Probably most are on Discord, but still wondering about all of this.

The real tragedy to lose would be r/ffxivdiscussion , where people actually talk about encounters and game systems/mechanics. That one's very forum-esque and doesn't translate to Discord well at all.

I was bored the other day and went looking for that sort of section on the official forums, was very surprised to see it doesn't exist. There's subforums for lore discussion and dungeon discussion (lol), but not a subforums for raid discussion or high-end duties in general.

Both types of discussion are welcome here - if this ever grows large enough that we need to split the "hardcore" crowd into their own community, we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

The REAL real tragedy would be losing r/shitpostxiv ๐Ÿคฃ

Also true. Shitpostxiv produces some real gold.

From what I've seen, they're probably focused on getting everything on Discord. Yesterday I remember seeing some pinned messages about channels to check out as replacements for the Daily Questions Megathread as well as the weekly rotating Megathreads.

Would love to see more people hop on here though, I believe this is the most populated FFXIV (heck FF in general) Community.

Hopefully here, I don't want to support discord trying to become more like every other social app.

[โ€“] Kovu@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

also discord is just awful to archive and you cant search it from outside the app. thats why im happy the balance finally has a website

I don't know how Discord became the end all be all for everything. Maybe it's because it's so easy to start a server? Either way as you said it's terrible for searching and having asynchronous conversations.

I think it mostly comes down to the fact that Discord has become so synonymous with PC gaming in general, that it is almost an expectation that if you play games on PC, you more than likely have a Discord account as well. That then creates a feedback loop where it becomes more convenient to use than other platforms, therefore it gets more popular, which makes it more convenient, etc.

And that works well when you have Discord for instant, synchronous messaging and voice chat and something like Reddit or another forum for more permanent, asynchronous discussions. Now that Reddit's going the way of Digg, people are looking for anything to replace its functionality. Discord gets close, but isn't quite there for the countless reasons already mentioned in this thread. That's why I really hope something like this community on Fediverse takes off.

It's just convenience, it has persistent chat, file upload, voice and video calls and screen sharing and an overlay and who knows what else people use nowadays. The average user doesn't care about data retention and availability, the inevitable enshittification of discord or their privacy, I'm still pining for the ancient days of forums, ts3, xfire/msn and IRC, which makes me feel old enough to just dissolve into the lifestream, but what can you do.

Choosing discord would be very appropriate for ffxiv then - after all, name a more iconic duo than FFXIV and absolutely atrocious UI decisions ๐Ÿ˜

[โ€“] Aurix@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Excuse me? Elder Scrolls Online could be considered almost unplayable without UI mods. You have no idea.

I don't think it's even trying to, it's just the users that see nails everywhere after getting a shiny new hammer. Discord is an excellent instant messenger & voice chat app, but it's in no way a Reddit or forum replacement. They've added threads but again, those work more for containing conversations that veered off the original topic or are too specific for a channel, not as a replacement for something like a Reddit post.

I agree. I just can't keep up with everything on Discord, especially larger channels. It can't replace open searchable content on the web (such as forums) by a long shot.

[โ€“] syphinaes@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 year ago

not to mention the sheer number of servers I have to join and deal with. it's an absolute mess.

[โ€“] Kryomaani@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

I believe this is the most populated FFXIV Community.

It's the only one in existence I can find using the community search, at least. I'd love to see it grow.

Discord is such a terrible destination for a sea of information, I really hope the end result isn't ending up there.

[โ€“] Dempf@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

I brought up this community on the ffxiv discord, and I think I managed to convince at least 1 person that lemmy is a pretty cool idea.

[โ€“] dan96kid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As someone from /r/ffxiv, I stumpled upon this place on my own

[โ€“] Aurix@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Same for me.
