I've been sorting by New, gives me a nice steady feed of content to fuel my Reddit addiction. Now developing a Lemmy addiction.

Unlike reddit, the "New" content on Lemmy isn't a cesspool of garbage. For the most part it's actually good high-effort posts, and I get to see them mere minutes or seconds after they're posted.

This is exactly what I've been doing. This has been the best Lemmy experience so far.

I have been as well, but I think it's only good because the Lemmy population is a tiny fraction of Reddit's. I think once Lemmy has a huge population, "new" will also be a problem. For now it's good.

But assuming we did want garbage, like NonCredibleDefense.... It's the only way to get my bro to switch.

I sort mainly by top of the day or new. I wish there were more time frames for the top category, but it is my current favorite. I sort by new a lot because most posts seem to be interesting and it has been a great way to find new communities.

Well, what do you want to see?

  • Active (default): Calculates a rank based on the score and time of the latest comment, with decay over time
  • Hot: Like active, but uses time when the post was published
  • New: Shows most recent posts first
  • Old: Shows oldest posts first
  • Most Comments: Shows posts with highest number of comments first
  • New Comments: Bumps posts to the top when they receive a new reply analogous to the sorting of traditional forums
[–] toofarapart@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Probably depends on what you're looking for? Active seems likes it's for looking for posts with active comment threads, Hot seems likes it's for posts that have a number of recent upvotes.

(Not sure if this is accurate, this is just the mental picture I've painted for myself)

Check out https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/users/03-votes-and-ranking.html for the difference and how voting affects things.

I've left it set to New for now. My Hot/Active feeds don't seem like they update all that much, at first I thought the Lemmy community was pretty quiet until I switched to New.

[–] Nobody@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've been using new with "Show Read Posts" unchecked in my profile to clear out what I've already seen.

[–] Bjoern_Tantau@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Has it started auto-marking posts as read when you scroll by? I'm personally waiting for that feature.

[–] Nobody@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I think you still have to click right now. I've heard the auto-scrolling is being phased out in the next update.

[–] VoidCrow@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I'm personally using hot atm, active doesn't work as well imo
