Here's everything we know about it so far:

  • It will use ActivityPub.
  • It will be a side app of Instagram.
  • It will most likely be called Threads.
  • Your Instagram verification status will transfer over.
  • There will be easy discovery tools in place: Your Instagram followers will be able to follow you on Threads as well (they won't transfer over automatically).

What do you think?

No, in fact I think this would make me less active on Instagram than I was before... And I'm not very active on it.

This is because If can use my mastodon account to communicate with Instagram users, then why do I also need an Instagram account?

I on principle don't delete accounts, I just park them and go inactive.

Why? Just why would they do that? They already have instagram and facebook. And now they want to literally make a clone of another product

Absolutely not. Have you forgotten the disaster that Facebook is?

[–] TranceReduction@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

Absolutely not. I'm fine sticking with Mastodon. Fuck Meta.

Oh gods no, that's one of the only companies who would make an even more toxic mess of a platform. I'll stick with the fediverse, thanks.

Oh, eww. A Meta/Twitter mashup? No. Just no.

I loathe Facebook, although my church uses it, so I'll grudgingly check it once in a blue moon. Never quite got the whole Twitter concept. Used Twitter intensively only once or twice for simulcast commentary back when the Sharknado series was a thing. And found I could sometimes get faster customer service on (for instance) airline snafus, when company portals were unresponsive, and phone queues required waiting through 3 hours of drecklich Muzak.

It sounds like nobody will, but Instagram influencers are actually a different kind of population, it's actually rather clever of meta to transfer the verification status. We wont be just talking about influencers but also athletes and celebrities.

Personally I wouldnt open an account, but I wouldn't be surprised if these celebrity followers will create one for the fomo

Also speaking of IG, I'm still amused why Meta has yet to full utilize IG's Stories. They kept pushing influencers to use Reels, but the bulk of their influencing is in the Stories.

Yeah, that's a no. Meta has no home in my life.

Absolutely not. I trust Meta with my data as far as I can throw any of their workers, and last time I checked (which tbf was in high school, but hey, not much has changed on this front), I can only lift like 40 lbs (again, it was high school and I'm trying to make a joke).

[–] TheLastOfHisName@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

Big time nope.

The large tech companies have shown us who they are. My time and what little money I do have will go to supporting the Fediverse.

I hope they get defederated immediately. There's not much more Facebook can do to prove they are a bad faith actor.

I'll still prefer Mastodon

[–] cvrz@mightywolf.ch 5 points 1 year ago

@cih@beehaw.org @technology@beehaw.org still Meta 🤮

[–] buhala@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 year ago

Honestly I only currently use Twitter to get information on companies that don't really post live updated anywhere else. I'd either stay on twitter or follow them to wherever they move

[–] damn@lemmy.fmhy.ml 5 points 1 year ago

Really hard to trust Meta. They could help advance ActivityPub. Or maybe they go full Microsoft Embrace Extend Extinguish and damage the Fediverse. Or it could be benign. Look at XMPP where it was adopted by big companies but they eventually stopped federating and down the line replaced it with their own proprietary protocols.

[–] Speex@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

Not a chance in this world I’ll join without them paying me money to do it.

[–] metalero@feddit.de 5 points 1 year ago

Nah, sticking to Fediverse and Nostr.

[–] primaryuser@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

No.

Easiest question of my life.

[–] ErraticWalrus@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

I might have a lurker account. Honestly, in the short time i've been on the fediverse it would have to be very compeling to do so. It's much better here.

[–] Pistachio@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

I deleted all of my Meta-owned accounts a long, long time ago. I will never seriously use any of their social media platforms again.

I haven't used a Meta product (or twitter) in years. I have no plans on going back. Neither of these businesses inspire confidence.

Obviously people here will refuse categorically, including me. The question is whether the rest of the world will

[–] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

I think Facebook & Zuckerberg can go fuck themselves.

[–] harbo@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

I’ll stick with Mastodon, but if it’s enabled through the fediverse I won’t want to ban their posts
