The truth lies in the actual quote. She's only saying that they need a backup in case he gets arrested or goes completely senile.

Its more akin to, 'our evil as shit old guy is getting a bit too old to keep doing all the evil shit we want, we need another younger fascist dictator in play'.

[–] Neato@kbin.social 14 points 11 months ago

Problem is I don't think Trump will run a VP that's a threat to him. Once they have a viable backup they'll throw Trump away and let him go to prison or impeach him to pretend to have ethics. So desantis or Nikki Haley won't be chosen.

[–] Rayspekt@kbin.social 14 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Quick, activate the McConnell-Protocol!

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 12 points 11 months ago

How is freezing up for 30 seconds during a press conference going to help?

[–] SlopppyEngineer@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 11 months ago

That has some real "Grand Vizier whispering in the Sultan's ear" vibes.

[–] Octavio@lemmy.world 82 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Imagine thinking that Trump was once mentally sharp.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 39 points 11 months ago (1 children)

If you go look at old interviews of him from the '80s, he wasn't ever necessarily smart, but at least he was coherent.

[–] Octavio@lemmy.world 16 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, I remember what he was like in the 80s. While I still wouldn’t call it mentally sharp, there does seem to have been a decline recently. Moreover, saying he isn’t as sharp as he once was doesn’t necessarily imply that he was all that sharp before. Perhaps I took a bit of a cheap shot.

[–] Rakonat@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I wouldn't even say the decline was recent. Early as the 00s he clearly was losing his grip in reality and the ability to make coherent sentences.

[–] jonne@infosec.pub 2 points 11 months ago

Even at the start of his presidential run he basically sounded like what you get if you just press next on your phone keyboard autocomplete suggestions. Not sure if you can really say he got worse than that.

[–] whofearsthenight@lemm.ee 21 points 11 months ago

That's what I was thinking. Boy's got a brain as smooth as a river stone, and somehow that's lost its point?

[–] Socsa@sh.itjust.works 59 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I'm sure the media will report this every fucking morning like they do for Biden

[–] Pratai@lemmy.ca 13 points 11 months ago (2 children)
[–] shadearg@lemmy.world 17 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

We're talking about the guy that testified, under oath, that he honestly believes everything is rigged against him.

That's demented paranoia.

Yeah, it's sarcasm.

Edit: grammar

[–] whofearsthenight@lemm.ee 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Oh they absolutely will. With Biden, they seem to selectively edit together clips of his minor speaking mistakes, with Trump they edit together the spots where he's coherent.

[–] aidan@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

I think you have a different view of who "the media" is than I do.

[–] Sho@lemm.ee 37 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Calling it now, he is found guilty but can't serve time due to being "mentally unfit" to be imprisoned.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 13 points 11 months ago (1 children)

So can he still serve as president if he’s mentally unable to be imprisoned? I bet they’ll say yes. And by they I mean SCrOTUS.

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world -4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yes, competency is up to the electorate, as it should be. Anything else is antidemocratic and a horrible idea.

[–] PrinceWith999Enemies@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Here’s what’s interesting though. The constitution itself sets several rather arbitrary qualifications for the office of president, so clearly they didn’t think that limiting people’s choices by making some candidates illegal was anti-democratic. They decided that the will of the people could not be permitted if it were to elect someone too young, or foreign born. It is anti-democratic, but it’s also fully constitutional. The constitution was written by several people who were rather skeptical of democracy and sought to limit its influence.

[–] nova_ad_vitum@lemmy.ca 11 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Followed by 60 million + Americans still voting for him.

[–] Something_Complex@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Who also wouldn't be fit to serve under office. I see stupid electing stupid.

The question is, how do you have so many of those people.

[–] TheJims@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

They’re not all stupid. Some of them are just horrible assholes.

[–] badbytes@lemmy.world 33 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Bout as sharp as a basketball

[–] Rakonat@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

I've encountered safety corners with sharper edges than Trump's mental capacity.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 31 points 11 months ago

It's The Emperor's New Clothes all over again, but instead of being naked, it's dementia.

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 9 points 11 months ago

So it's the Reagan presidency all over again.

[–] Something_Complex@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Let's hope he can hear the little girl saying "but mommy he isn't wearing anything"

[–] schwim@reddthat.com 25 points 11 months ago

Donald was never "mentally sharp".

[–] CountLugosi@lemmus.org 18 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Trump during interview, "I can count to potato."

[–] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

"You know, I know some potatoes. The best potatoes. Beautiful potatoes, really. I really mean it. I am the best potato counter. Seriously. I know many professional potato counters, smart guys, and they say ask me how I can count potatoes so well. I tell them I don't know! I know actually, I just am that naturally good. It isn't hard for me. You know who is terrible at counting potatoes? Biden. He can't count to potato with both hands. He just falls asleep. Ol' Sleepy Joe, many call him, can't count to potato. It's sad. You know who can? Me. Just remember that when you step into the voting booth. He things you all are so dumb, but he can't even count to potato. You all are so smart, such beautiful people, real Americans. I can count to potato and you can count on me."

[–] lipilee@feddit.nl 15 points 11 months ago

But can he still say man woman person camera tv?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 12 points 11 months ago

Ya think, Megan?

Although it's pretty good when even the lady who insisted that Jesus and Santa are "just white" realizes Trump is demented.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

And he was never that sharp to start with...

[–] profdc9@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

In order news, Republicans are lining up to be his Vice President.

[–] TheJims@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Retribution from trumps deranged band of violent unhinged degenerates in 3… 2… 1

[–] Candelestine@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Uh ... yea, that's exactly what they're going to pretend. Thanks for asking. They don't trust you either anymore, btw.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

'16? As in 1970'16?

[–] autotldr@lemmings.world 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly said former President Donald Trump is not as "mentally sharp" as he once was.

Kelly moderated the fourth Republican primary debate hosted by NewsNation on Wednesday, which Trump did not attend.

While speaking to Beck, Kelly said she believed the Republican party needed to have an "undercard" in case Trump ends up jailed or unable to run due to his ongoing legal issues.

In a post on Truth Social just after midnight on Friday, Trump weighed in on the GOP debate and said that "the biggest loser was Megyn Kelly."

Trump's word blunders come amid the media's fixation on 80-year-old Biden's mental acuity.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll from May revealed that only 32% of respondents were confident in Biden's "mental sharpness" being adequate for the White House.Biden's campaign has taken to social media to redirect attention to Trump's cognitive abilities, reported The Washington Post.

The original article contains 374 words, the summary contains 151 words. Saved 60%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!

Your candidate has worse cognitive decline than ours!!

I can't believe this is the state of presidential politics.
