Curious if this is possible or if it goes against the TOS?

I have been doing that, the biggest problem I have is that they alter your videos if there is any copyright audio in it. In one video there was a radio running in the background on a home video from the 90ies and people were talking. YouTube muted the full audio because of a copyright claim even though it was private.

Damn, that is so strange that they do that even with the video being private.

I posted a homemade video to YouTube once. It was of a coworker chugging a bottle of soy sauce, then puking it back up. YouTube's automod blocked it for nudity. It was literally just a few guys in the office, joking around while this guy chugged soy sauce. We were wearing military uniforms, so the automod probably misinterpreted the tan T-shirt as bare skin or something.

They gave me only one chance to contest the block, and when I submitted my response, it was almost immediately denied. I guarantee that was an automated response and not a real person who reviewed my case.

Nearly a decade later, I noticed it let me contest it again, so I submitted another request and got an actual human response this time, saying I was right, there was no nudity in the video. My video was restored. But I had several years with no access to the video because YouTube blocked it.

I also posted another homemade video with my own audio compilation of pop/rock music over it. It was up for a few years, until YouTube started scanning videos for copyrighted music. Now the video is muted and it's been so long, I don't think I have the original copy anymore. I can't pull it from YouTube because it's just mute. They won't give me access to the audio of the video.

So that's a home video I made that I just don't have the full unedited version of anymore, thanks to YouTube. Definitely don't use them as a backup service for your videos.

It doesn't matter. They can strike or penalize you over a video that has already been deleted.

Just because it's private today, don't mean you might not make it public tomorrow.

[–] IMongoose@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Ya, that's pretty much the main functionality of private videos, to test them before going public or schedule them for later. It would be pretty annoying if the video changed after making it public. Also private or public, you still need to follow copyright laws.

This sparked a memory.

I uploaded a video of a party there 15+ years ago. Have not thought about it in more than a decade...yep it is still there.

To follow up: What is a good solution for OPs use case?

Personal section on Jellyfin?

[–] jeena@jemmy.jeena.net 2 points 10 months ago

I'd say if you want to have similar functionality of YouTube but without the drawback that they might disappear, and you're ok with hosting something yourself (or pay for hosting) then I'd suggest PeerTube.

I found this topic interesting so I recorded a short video about it: https://tube.jeena.net/w/cDsbBBveaAWJFZJXwpJRDH

[–] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 2 points 10 months ago

I assume what op is looking for is a long term non-selfhosted backup of their videos.

From the comments here I think just uploading (encrypted if they feel that is necessary) to a free cloud storage account would also be an option. May be upload to several for redundancy.

[–] Nibodhika@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

That's what I do, other alternatives include Nextcloud or Dropbox/Gdrive if you don't want to self host.

[–] SHITPOSTING_ACCOUNT@feddit.de 4 points 10 months ago

You can, but don't. You will always lose quality, you don't know if you will always be able to reliably download it in the future, you don't know when YouTube decides that private videos are unprofitable, and you don't know when YouTube will start applying some kind of content checks to your videos, decide they are in violation, and block/delete them.

Just pay for storage and upload encrypted copies or store an extra (encrypted) hard drive with a friend or so.

[–] amio@kbin.social 2 points 10 months ago

There's no reason it would be against the TOS, but there's no particular reason it'd make a good backup either. Youtube doesn't limit its weird, arcane, random-ass mutes and takedowns to public vids. At the very least make sure it's not your only backup.

[–] Nibodhika@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Besides the possible takedown and mutes other mentioned you might lose quality, videos that are not watched get compressed more harshly for what I understand.
