Hi, I'm fairly new to the fediverse. Is there any alternatives for Facebook marketplace out there?

Craigslist? AFAIK their business model is quite forward thinking.

People still use craigslist? Seems pretty niche at this point, but I could be wrong though. Also, how is their business model forward thinking, how do you mean?

CL is huge in larger metro areas like LA or SF Bay area. I've bought and sold many vehicles plus smaller stuff.

No ads and a flat design that hasn’t changed in years. I could be wrong though, I’m not in the US, I just read about it.

Unfortunately not. I think some areas have hashtags for that kind of stuff and someone is working on a new platform, but it's not there yet.

Awesome, It will be interesting to see what it develops into!

marketplace is one of the last things holding me back from jumping off that platform I think.

Same. I only install and use FB when I need to sell something

What country are you in? They have Gumtree in the UK and Australia. My gumtree feedback page is one of my lifes proudest achievements.

[–] rustyriffs@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

That sounds like a cool app. I'm in the USA

Aussie here. Gumtree is worse than useless ever since eBay purchased it and ran it into the ground with ads, excessive sponsored placements, a substantial price increase for promotion, and did nothing about the rampant bot problem. You'll occasionally get some use out of it, but imo, the site is dead, and by design. I truly believe eBay fucked it on purpose, as it used to be a decent competitor before the acquisition.

Hi, I've recently read here on Lemmy an article stating that an extension of the ActivityPub protocol to support facebook marketplace's like transaction is being considered, but I don't have any more detail

[–] rustyriffs@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

That's exciting to know. Thanks for sharing!

Not FB market but a Fedi alternative to Etsy https://artisans.coop/

[–] rustyriffs@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Not really what I asked for, no, but I'm super glad to know about it though! Thank you!

Kijiji is pretty popular in Canada. Varagesale is another one I've seen.

Not Lemmy but try NextDoor app. I have sold a lot on there in the last few years.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 18 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Nextdoor is ok for selling. But the social part is an absolute shithole of insane people.

[–] JimmyBigSausage@lemm.ee 4 points 11 months ago

Yes! It is a dumpster fire of a consortium but sometimes it is ok for finding local resources, like a plumber for example, but some crazies can be ever-present.

[–] rustyriffs@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Thanks for the recommendation. I've heard of this one before, but not that familiar with it.

Is there any benefits/drawbacks to this one vs. fb marketplace?

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 6 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

It's fine, but know that it is by far the most hateful place I've seen. I got it, oh it'd be fun to know my neighbors a bit I thought.

I was wrong. Every racist boomer out there is on it. Some? Examples include:

Who is this person? Anyone know him? (Insert photo of a random black man walking on the sidewalk) should I call the police?

Who is barbequing today? It's a Thursday! Don't people WORK anymore?!

Crime in our neighborhood is crazy high! I used to feel safe here but there's new elements that are ROBBING US. (In the comments then they reveal they left a laptop visible in the back seat and their car was broken into)

These are real posts from my nextdoor app. Zero exaggerating, this is what the app is like.

You have been warned.

[–] JimmyBigSausage@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago

You can sell to your very local area if you like.

[–] axo@feddit.de 1 points 11 months ago

Not really what you asked for, but here in germany exist networks of big telegram groups where people give away their stuff for free. Maybe something like it exists also where you live.

Here theyre called "natural ressources"

[–] Zealousideal_Fox900@lemmy.world 0 points 11 months ago

Gumtree for australia.

[–] palitu@aussie.zone -2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Love the idea, but ripe for abuse, also the critical mass of muggles using it to be worthwhile.

But, we can dream!

[–] rustyriffs@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

I'm definitely going to keep dreaming then because I think we can do it better.
