Local communities are on /communities, remote communities will show up on a search if the instance is already federating. Otherwise Cut & paste the URL of the remote community into the search box of your instance.

The "paste in the search box" is very unintuitive indeed. I hope that at some point following remote communities that are not yet federated will become easier.
