I know this is not a Christian community, but I recently discovered Tachiyomi looking for alternatives to Saikou and a good alternative to read manga (which I don't do much, but it makes me curious) is Tachiyomi and although installing extensions is really simple the vast majority have NSFW content (or hentai?) and Jesus, I want to look for Pokemon manga and if I install extensions randomly I end up finding things I'd rather not have seen before, and many SFW extensions "don't work" or give an error that something went wrong.

MangaDex is my top one.

(Edited it misspelled is without a n)

[–] Xirup@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 year ago

I can confirm, it has very good content!

MagaDex must be where all the bootleg far right speeches are

[–] SweetMylk@lemm.ee 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why don't you just disable 18+ sources in the settings? Look at the Browse submenu.

I have no problem with NSFW content, since I won't see it so I don't care that it's there. In general there are so many extensions that I just wanted some "general extension" that has everything, so I asked here because I installed about 15 and most of them had only NSFW content or not work at all, so maybe someone here knew more than me.

That option should solve your issue.

Couple of questions before I recommend:

  1. Manga only? or are you also interested in manhwa?

  2. What about extensions which have both sfw and nsfw? Are you fine with those?

[–] Xirup@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)
  1. Yes, only manga.
  2. I have no problem if the extension has NSFW mixed with SFW, the problem is that most of them I tried only had weird hentai Pokemon manga. So yes!

Try manga reader, manganato, and bato

TCB scans only has a few manga (top shounen jump stuff like one piece, aot, black clover, etc.), but it's really good for those.

[–] Xirup@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I will check them out, thanks for the help.

Really good suggestions, good to know

[–] Draft@lemm.ee 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just did a quick search with the extensions that I have installed. The ones I found that gave the best search results were bato.to, mangadex, mangakakalot, and manganato. A few of these I have found scans that weren't up to date, but I have a feeling most Pokémon manga are already going to be complete.

I hope this helps!

[–] Xirup@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

Mangadex works great, I will try the others to see if they also have as good results.

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Xirup's phone is hentai free. Lookin for it? Leave. hentai-free

Jokes aside, mangakakalot, mangalife, and manganato seem to work well and have a wide selection. If they're not working for you, maybe try a fresh install?

If you're delving into bootlegs, you might just need to be prepared to run into NSFW content, though.

My go to is discovering comics outside of tachiyomi and then searching them inside. For most manga that exists on webpages like mangahere or mangakakalot, the first or last page tells you which scanlators did it, and in most cases there's an extension to their direct webpage. You can then add that extension and migrate the comic.

Also, you can go to settings, browse, and untick the option for +18 content sources. Those extensions should dissappear.

If you are into self hosting there is a very good tachiyomi plugin for Komga which is a manga and comics server you can self host and fill with your own content, it also supports connecting to multiple servers.

I have 2 Komga instances running on my home server (one for normal manga and one for the.. other kind), content is collected by FMD2 which automatically downloads series I have set to monitor (similar to sonarr but less polished). then in tachiyomi I have access to all of that content streamed across the web to my phone and boox e-reader anywhere in the world. it's pretty neat but the only missing feature is synchronising read status and position across devices.

Thanks for this question, OP! I made the mistake of asking this question on Tachiyomi's discord and they were very unpleasant about it (and apparently they don't want people using all the same extensions too).

Some have already been mentioned here but currently I have been using:

  • MangaDex (I still don't know how to make NSFW titles appear tho)
  • Bato.to
  • Mangabat
  • Mangakakalot
  • MangaLife
  • MangaBuddy
  • Mangago
  • Manganelo.biz
  • MyReadingManga
  • Manga Rock Team

Thanks for the answer, some of the extensions you said actually had not been mentioned.

I know this question is out of the scope of this post at first, but what manga do you recommend? I know it's something super offtopic but honestly Tachiyomi (with the right extensions) has a huge selection of manga, and I find it interesting to start reading manga.

I haven't read manga for years and I barely watch anime sometimes, but I like anime (and consequently, manga) like Berserk, Fairy Tail, Full Metal Alchemist, One Punch Man, etc.

Tachiyoni has been great, I use MangaDex for almost everything, Colored Manga and Comick are nice too. Check out Vagabond, Vinland Saga and Parasyte. You can find Parasyte in full color too.

[–] TheLobotomist@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Vagabond has always been my absolute favorite... But it will never be completed, and this breaks my heart

Loving vinland saga too!

[–] Stormcrow@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago

Ya that's the worst part of starting it, same with Berserk, tho maybe it will be finished one day.

[–] EstrangedMoistness@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I'm using mangalife almost exclusively (18 ongoing, 50 done) and it works perfectly. Always has everything from chapter 1 to current chapter of any manga, in good quality and with great English translations. Highly recommend and no NSFW (use specific extensions with incognito mode for that)

[–] Templa@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'd recommend having your library spread through various sources as sometimes extensions stop working and you might need to migrate all mangas one by one

[–] EstrangedMoistness@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Good point about SPOF and backups! Thanks!

I think using the same extension for all mangas is ok if you get some backup extensions to migrate the manga you're currently reading at will. The ones you listed in another comment are great.

I'm usually reading one manga at a time + the ongoing ones when a new chapter drops (via notifications, which is my initial need of Tachiyomi). From my personal experience (which is technically riskier than your suggestion, but more comfortable) with mangalife, in the 3-4 years I've been using it, having to migrate due to outage was fortunately not a problem.

[–] lemillionsocks@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

mangasee is pretty solid and usually has higher quality than average uploads.

[–] neo@lemmy.comfysnug.space 1 points 1 year ago

If you're self hosting, Kavita; otherwise, MangaDex
