Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, made the comments in an 8,000-word article on Russian-Polish relations, saying Moscow now had a "dangerous enemy" in Poland.

Poland, which has backed Ukraine, accuses Russia of trying to destabilise the country with disinformation campaigns and espionage. Moscow has condemned what it sees as Warsaw's hostile stance towards it and Russian interests in Poland.

There was no immediate response to Medvedev's comments from Poland.

I’m convinced his role is to say the most outrageous things so putin sounds more reasonable

outrageous

I mean, you're probably not Medvedev's target audience. I don't follow Russian politics, but I expect that he's talking to a portion of Russia's electorate that enjoys him saying things like that and doesn't consider it to be outrageous.

Lol, does all of Russia suffer from short man syndrome? They clearly know that they're just blowing smoke because any attack on Poland would trigger article 5 and get their shit stomped in. They can't even get through Ukraine, what makes them think they can take on even one NATO power, let alone NATO itself?

[–] bedrooms@kbin.social 10 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Tbf there are non-militarily ways to bring down a country. Like election meddling and so on.

[–] taladar@feddit.de 3 points 11 months ago

Tricky to do in a country that just had one.

[–] ChrisLicht@lemm.ee 21 points 11 months ago (1 children)

That’s a fight everyone/no one should want to see. Russia would get absolutely stomped on the ground, but Poland would be staring down the barrel of a missile silo.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe -1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Gonna be honest with ya fam, some of the Polish people who have talked about it seem pretty hyped at the idea.

[–] Rin@lemm.ee 10 points 11 months ago (1 children)

We like to fantasise about wiping the floor with Russians by triggering article 5. However, no one wants to experience the harshness of war.

[–] febra@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago

Especially nuclear war.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.de 20 points 11 months ago (1 children)

he didnt even, or even failing to, conquered Ukraine and already threatens Poland? What a stupid Muppet with allusions of grandeur.

[–] 0x815@feddit.de 8 points 11 months ago

Yeah, and we must not forget that Poland is a Nato member.

How is it still news what Medvedev saying?

This guy is spewing out the most insane pro-government propaganda ever since he left office, because he knows that he's leaving the building through a window if he ever stops. During his presidency he dared to criticize Russia (and by that the former government, so Putin et al) and took a more western stance.

He's a puppet and will never say anything sane again in his life.

[–] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 6 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

He was a seat warmer put in place while term limits were still a thing and Putin had to bounce between higher offices.

[–] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 3 points 11 months ago

Well, they now have to say "Putin ally" in the headline to bait you into clicking on the article to find out who it was.
Thankfully the Fediverse allows texts under hyperlink submissions.

I think the point is to highlight how ridiculous and dangerous Kremlin propaganda targeted at Russians is.

[–] Jaysyn@kbin.social 19 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Currently, Poland would murderfuck #Ruzzia before the rest of NATO could get their shoes on.

[–] LordOfLocksley@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Considering America has been ramping up it's presence there since the beginning of the Ukraine war, Poland would not be fighting that battle alone from the start

[–] jeena@jemmy.jeena.net 15 points 11 months ago

Couldn't Poland just say:

[–] febra@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago

Even more wishful thinking on Russia's side. They can barely take on a non-NATO country, Ukraine, yet they dream of somehow attacking Poland.. This is not even hilarious at this point, just sad.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 14 points 11 months ago

'We're gonna invade you,' says KGB grandpa, in latest advertisement for NATO membership.

[–] Lysergid@lemmy.ml 10 points 11 months ago

Just after elections in Poland. Coincidence?

[–] gigachad@feddit.de 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Classic trolling by Medvedev

[–] interolivary@beehaw.org 3 points 11 months ago (2 children)

It's funny how at one time he was the sane alternative to Putin. I wonder what happened

[–] maynarkh@feddit.nl 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I've seen people speculate he's being insane to rule himself out as a possible alternative so that Putin does not kill him. Otherwise if he was a viable alternative, sanctioned oligarchs might decide to off Putin and get Medvedev in to get the sanctions lifted.

[–] interolivary@beehaw.org 4 points 11 months ago

That's not a bad hypothesis at all. He really does seem to be much more unhinged than he was during his stint as president when he was pretty milquetoast in comparison, so I can't help but wonder wtf's going on

[–] pfannkuchen_gesicht@lemmy.one 2 points 11 months ago (2 children)

In an alternate reality? In this one he never was.

[–] interolivary@beehaw.org 1 points 11 months ago

He wasn't nearly as insane when he was president for that short while

[–] MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Exactly, he was always just another evil shit.

[–] interolivary@beehaw.org 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Sure, he's still a Russian politician so some level of "evil" is to be expected, but would you seriously claim he was exactly as unhinged when he was president? Because if you would, either you weren't paying attention then or you're not paying attention now – something's definitely changed, and it's not like I'm the only person who's noticed.

The Guardian brought it up a year ago, and eg. the Harvard Kennedy School's Russia Matters project even has a list outlining how cramatically his views have changed

[–] MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org 1 points 11 months ago

No, no, he never seemed unhinged, but since I live in a places that's somewhat similar I know you just can't treat regime men as men. He doesn't have anything without daddy so he says what daddy says, we could say he's just another mouthpiece

[–] Rayspekt@kbin.social 2 points 11 months ago

When you are in a talk delusional challenge and your opponent is Bedwetjev.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

MOSCOW, Nov 2 (Reuters) - A top ally of President Vladimir Putin warned Poland on Thursday that the NATO member state was now considered a "dangerous enemy" by Russia and could end up losing its statehood if it continued on its current course.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, made the comments in an 8,000-word article on Russian-Polish relations, saying Moscow now had a "dangerous enemy" in Poland.

"History has more than once delivered a merciless verdict to the presumptuous Poles: no matter how ambitious the revanchist plans may be, their collapse could lead to the death of Polish statehood in its entirety."

Poland, which has backed Ukraine, accuses Russia of trying to destabilise the country with disinformation campaigns and espionage.

Moscow has condemned what it sees as Warsaw's hostile stance towards it and Russian interests in Poland.

Diplomats say his views give an indication of thinking at the top levels of the Kremlin elite.

Oh yay an authoritarian wants control of Poland. That bodes well
