It's not Data, the correct pronunciation is Data.

[–] digger@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The one on the left is pronounced GIF and the one on the right is pronounced GIF.

[–] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Actually, I'm pretty sure you have them flipped

[–] ElBarto@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

You're both wrong, the G is silent.

One is my name, the other is not.

[–] NessD@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago (6 children)

Gif as in gift. Anything else is nonsense!

Graphics Interchange Format. Hard G.

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 year ago

I use a hard G but this is a bad argument. I'll just link to this great list of counterexamples:

Always pronounce it "GIF."

Never "JIF."

Only Lore does that.

Data definitely says the hard g. His interests are in being more human. Not pedantically arguing about the way the creator says things in an attempt to upend the majority. The latter is definitely Lore's jam, though

Be more like Data.

Way to start another flame war Xusontha! Or is it Zusontha?

[–] grue@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

...It's secretly a Greek letter chi, isn't it?

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Choosy websites choose gif.

(And if anyone gets that reference I'll be thrilled.)

[–] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 6 points 1 year ago

It's Gif the Giraffe!

Lore: It's pronounced GIF... because of the implication.

[–] Downcount@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't care as long as you don't say Jetpack to JPG like my old collegue used to say.

[–] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 5 points 1 year ago

Whut

That's an actual crime

[–] macabrett@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago

I pronounce it like gin but I don't really care how someone else pronounces it.

Do you pronounce origin like the state?
