Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online

What are your hobbies?
Fishin'
Oh yes, i saw the uh, that one film they shot on the fishing boat! That certainly was an …interesting choice of bait. And a highly unusual catch as well 😳
Any fool can bait a hook, but it takes years to become a mastur.
I saw that one too! The actors had to work with what they were given because of the implication from the director.
Designing washing machines

Oscar winning story writing?
Hackaday has been a great place as a starting point for a wide variety of hobbies. And for seeing what fun things people put together
Lichess.org is a great place to play chess, or to study it. Free, open source, run by a great team. Highly recommend.
Yeah I find it's metrics on other games so helpful when studying a line.
p5js.org. It is a beginner-friendly website for creating stuff in JavaScript straight into a browser. They also have resources and tutorials. After trying to learn coding for a long time, this is the place where it finally clicked for me.
Coding train on YouTube is quite fond of p5js and has some awesome videos on building things in that.
Ooh nice, I will definitely look into that
codewars.com is great if you're into coding puzzles. It has them in just about every language imagineable. I'm amazed it's not more well-known cos it's a great site.
The problem with "what to buy to get started" is that that question is tantalizingly juicy to advertisers. Therefore, when a place is found it is usually captured by low quality high dollar cost advertisers (like reddit or amazon or essentially all the other sites that carry and recommend hobbiest products).
I think your best bet is to get to know a few people who actually are doing the hobby (not a advertising influencer) and see the cost points for real hobbiests.
Isn't this the point of the OP, to get info from a few people who actually are doing the hobby?
He asked for a generalist site, so a site that has already been captured.
I don't see this reflected in the question at all.
All being related to your hobby.
The way I read it, this last line suggests the opposite. OP wants people to recommend resources specific to their own hobbies.
Kind of a hobby
XDA has everything regarding modding android software: guides, discussions, projects you can download, etc
Except for almost every device I want to put custom firmware on, apparently.
Lemmy seems to be a good place to start. ;)
I usually use ddg to search for sites, lurk there for a while to see what the questions and answers are and after a while either ask a question myself, when I like the site and haven't seen the questlon with appropiate answer in search results. That is, when I'm not member of a RL club and they have meetings/a site I can find the answer.
This website is helpful for finding anime to watch. It has a robust tag and recommendations system. If you don't know where to start I picked a favourite of mine.

https://jastusa.com/ is a great site to buy anime games.
https://jlist.com/ and https://www.amiami.com/eng/ are great merchandise sites.
https://www.hidive.com/ is a streaming site for anime that I find has a great selection
