Even though I set the visibility of my birthday to "Only you", people were messaged on my birthday that it occurred.

Keep in mind that even though LinkedIn states that other people are not messaged when you set this to a private setting, they still are.

Obviously another capitalist industrial shenanigan from one of our favourite data krakens, Microsoft.

Another reason to never sign up for LinkedIn, I suppose.

Unfortunately there's no real alternative (other than personal networking) to get a job in some countries. I hate LinkedIn with a passion, but I am stuck with it. Do you know of a better alternative ?

That's unfortunate to hear. As I am still studying at the uni and get part-time work through the privacy-respecting student job market, I'm not personally acquainted with LinkedIn or other job-searching sites.

Such horrible companies. Also worth noting that going through linkedin’s privacy settings to change defaults is probably one of the most tedious process in the world, which probably discourage most users.

I bet that's intentional.

if you live in a GDPR country, consider filing a complaint with your local data protection authority

~~ugh, that's tedious. Can't I just hit up my Landesdatenschutzbeauftragter on Mastodon?~~

nvm, they have an online form. "Ihre Beschwerde wurde versandt." (your complaint has been registered)

Another day, another LinkedIn leak. Didn't they have millions of people's personal data leaked last year or so?

Kind of a shame there isn't a real alternative. There are some alternatives but usually it's so much more preferred for companies that you have a linkedin account when applying for a job.

Was that before or after Microsoft bought them? Does Microsoft have leaks often?

There's Xing. Did they leak data yet? I have accounts on both services so I can stalk other people or remember their names when I only see them a couple of times a year.

Microsoft is usually on top of privacy stuff but the companies they buy operate mostly independently from what I hear. I don't think there's much correlation.

The big leak happened last year though, it was a massive fuck up from linkedin. Almost everyone's data got leaked. https://restoreprivacy.com/linkedin-data-leak-700-million-users/

There’s Xing.

First I've heard of it. Here's the thing, there are alternatives but what matters is which is popular. Company presence is the most important thing in these websites, when I attach my LinkedIn profile to a job it increases my chances of being seen by a lot. If I attach something like Xing they'll probably just ignore me.

It's like WhatsApp. Are the great alternatives? For sure. Does it matter? No, because my family and colleagues and normie friends are too resistant of letting it go, so I'm forced to use it. Best I can do is get my inside circle to use something else.

No it couldn't leak mine because I don't have an account

[–] Helix@feddit.de 3 points 2 years ago

let's hope nobody creates one for you without your knowledge ;)
