Two years ago they said it was going to be ready by the end of that year, but there has been no news since then. My personal guess is that they're waiting to finish the rewrite of the app, and don't want to spend resources on the current version besides bugfixies

Yes the engineers team updated with a long blog post on the development situation and explained that they "will also need to rewrite these apps to retire their technical debt".

Hopefully the new Android version will be released this year but they never mentioned F-Droid

Protonmail seems to eventually deliver, but is working at a glacial pace where it matters when it comes to their privacy claims.
