Is there a way to view another instances local communities without going to the website? It would be much more convenient than going to that sites community page and copying the link to your own instance.

The whole instances shown in the "communities" that next to your instance name above. I subscribe from there.

I think those only show communities that you or fellow users on your instance have searched. Other than its local communities.
